Date-stamped : 29 Jan95 - 10:30 MATCH REPORTS and commentary, India in Australia, Test 4, Jan 25-29, 1992 ------------------------ DAY 1 ------------------------------ T4, Aus v Ind, D1, before play For Aust, Reiffel 12th man, for India, Shastri out, Srikkanth in, also playing Pandit, & Raju, Amre 12th man. Temperature in Adelaide just 17 C - pitch is claimed to be going to bounce moe than is usual in Adelaide. Azharuddin won the toss and has sent Australia in to bat. The match starts in about 5 minutes. T4, Aus v Ind, D1, 1st hour India won the toss and sent Australia in. Kapil Dev opened the attack for India, bowling to Marsh initially, with Mark Taylor at the other end. First ball was nothing special, not a lot of bounce, Marsh let it go outside the off stump. Next ball he turned to fine leg, took a single, then after considering it, took a second and just beat a throw which was a bit high home. Kapil is bowling with 3 slips and a gully, plus bat pad. The fourth ball swung away quite a lot - Pandit had to move nearly in front of Vengsarkar at 1st slip to take it. Just two runs from the first over. Prabhakar came on at the other end, as would be expected, and bowled his first ball to Taylor - also his first ball. Taylor took two down to shortish backward square leg, Sidhu had to come up from deep file leg to field. The first extra of the innings was a leg bye taken a couple of balls later. Marsh didn't score from the remainder of the over, one ball of which was very wide, and ept very low, through to Pandit on the second bounce. Taylor took another leg bye from the first ball of Kapil's second over, moving the score to 6 without loss. This is Marsh's 50th test match, and also the 50th test at the Adelaide oval. Just 6 grounds have had more tests - Lords, the MCG, the SCG, the Oval, Old Trafford, and Headingly. Marsh played out the remainder of the over, without really being required to put his bat anywhere near the ball. A maiden over, just the leg bye. Prabhakar has decided to come around the wicket to Taylor, and brought in a backward square leg. Just two slips and a gully, with short leg. The backward square only lasted a few balls before he was moved back to third slip. Its not exactly clear what's happening there. It was a maiden in any case, still 0/6. Marsh edged (along the ground) through slips, and took two from the last ball of Kapil's third over. 0/8. Parbhakar came back over the wicket for his next over, Taylor took a single into the on side - Prabhakar is bowling mostly on leg stump to Taylor (including when he was around the wicket). Marsh took a single to square leg to end this over on 5, with Australia at 10. Another to Marsh from Kapil's next over, then Marsh took two from Parbhakar's next, and followed that by an attempt to get his bat out of the way of one going down off side, but wasn't quick enough, got an inside edge, and onto the stumps. = Marsh B Prabhakar 8 1/13 @11:24 Boon came out to replace Marsh, and took a leg bye from his second ball. The over ended with Aust on 1/14. Taylor 3, and extras 3, Boon yet to score. Boon took a quick single from the first ball of Kapil Dev's next over to open his account for the match. A single to Taylor, then two more for Boon followed in the over. 1/18 after 9 overs. Prabhakar bowled on leg stump to Taylor again, Taylor took two to square leg, which prompted Azharuddin to move a man to the backward square area again. Taylor responded by driving through mid off, Azha had to throw himself to save the boundary, but still allowed two. Nothing to write about in the next few overs, 1/23 after 12. Taylor 8, Boon 4, extras 3. Kapil opened with an LBW appeall from the next over, the players behind the stumps were enthusiastic, Kapil didn't seem that agressive in his appeal. Ball was pitched around leg stump to Taylor, straightening slightly - Taylor was a little forward. This was another maiden over. Boon took the first boundary of the innings from the final ball of Prabhakar's next over, turned forward of square. Srinath replaced Kapil after a 7 over spell from the master Indian bowler. That was a maiden to Taylor, not a lot of bounce in evidence for Srinath either, though that was probably just a warm up over. Two twos to Boon from Prabhakar's next over ended the first hour of the first day, with Aust on 1/31, Boon 12, Marsh 8, and still 3 extras. T4, Aus v Ind, D1, Lunch Drinks were taken with Australia on 1/31, losing just Marsh in the first hour after being sent in to bat by Azharuddin. Taylor took the first run from Srinath in the first over of the hour. Srinath then bowled the first illegal delivery of the day to Boon, who took a single for his own score. Srinath, now around the wicket to Taylor, followed immediately with another no ball, this one Taylor took two from. 1/35. Tendulkar replaced Prabhakar at the other end next over. Taylor attempted to cut one that moved back into him, and just succeeded in chopping it back onto his stumps. = Taylor B Tendulkar 11 2/36 @12:15 Border played out the remaining ball of Tendulkar's over. Srinath, back over the wicket to Boon, bowled three more no balls in his third over (two in his second - if that keeps up his 10th over will be a long one). No runs taken from that over, just the extras. Next over, Tendulkar to Border, Border attempted a big drive, obtained just the inside edge, which Pandit took low down, but easily, without needing to move, Tendulkar now has 2/0. = Border C Pandit B Tendulkar 0 3/39 @12:24 Jones played out the rest of Tendulkar's second maiden over, first ball he was taken on the pads, pretty much in line, but had gotten an edge, and there was no appeal. Kapil came back to replace Srinath after just three overs. Boon took a leg bye (extras now 8, still no runs from the bat since Taylor was dismissed). Jones wanted a single from the only ball he faced in the over, but Tendulkar came in quickly from the covers to prevent it. 3/40. Tendulkar bowled one a bit short, outside off stump, Boon cut to the boundary, then followed that by a single to square leg. Jones had just one ball in the over to face, or should have had, but that was a no ball, taking the score to 3/46 (Boon 18, Jones 0, extras 9). The actual final ball was wide outside off stump, and was let go past. To Boon, Kapil has 2 slips & a gully, silly point, and short leg (bat pad). Boon didn't score from the over, though he played a few shots, but always to the field. Jones off the mark with two behind square from the first ball of Tendulkar's fourth over. Pandit is standing up at the stumps now. with two slips & a gully, no other close field. Tendulkar pushed one down leg side, probably looking for the stumping by Pandit's actions, but it was a no ball, and Jones got his pad on it and deflected it away for a leg bye. Boon followed with another single from an attempted bouncer by Tendulkar (Pandit had gone back with Boon on strike) to retain the strike against Kapil for the next over. 3/50. Kapil has the same field to Boon as he had in his previous over. After a few balls, Kapil got one between Boon's bat and pad, cut back just a little and took the top of off stump. =A Boon B Kapil Dev 19 4/50 @12:46 Kapil completed his over, with one ball to Mark Waugh, a half LBW appeal from this, but not really. Prabhakar came back to bowl to Jones who immediately attacked, driving from the back foot through coves for four (Jones now has 1000 first class runs this season). Another four followed at the end of the over. 4/58. The international cricketer of the year prize car is parked right behind the sight screen, with its windscreen aimed at Mark Waugh, shining in his eyes, through the sight screen - eventually the windscreen was covered, and play could continue. Kapil got one to take Waugh's pad and carry to second slip - no bat, and no appeal there, Waugh followed with a straight drive for three from the next ball. This allowed Kapil to bowl to Jones for the first time, just one ball. 4/61. Jones 10, Waugh 3, Extras 10. Prabhakar continued to Waugh this should be the last over of the session, Aust won't want to loose another wicket. Waugh drove straight through long on, it was chased down before the boundary - long boundaries straight at Adelaide, but the batsmen had completed four runs anyway. After a couple of bouncers (but not very high, possibly not high enough to count as bouncers under the one bouncer rule - in any case, no ball wasn't called) Waugh took another two from the last ball of the session. Jones 10, Waugh 9, Extras 10, and Australia 4/67 at lunch. A good session for India, and Azharuddin will feel satisfied with his decision to send Australia in I expect. T4, Aus v Ind, D1, 3rd hour At lunch, after having been sent in, Australia were 4/67, with Jones and Waugh batting. Kapil opened the session, Jones took one four from one of Kapil's early balls (loosener). Jones 14, Waugh 9, 4/71 Prabhakar continued at the other end, with Srikkanth moved from short leg to a short mid wicket position. Waugh took a single through that area, which was the only run from the over. Waugh played past Srikkanth again from the first ball of Kapil's second over of the session, this time for two, as Srikkanth chased. Sidhu mis-fielded at mid on to allow an easy single, Jones had one ball of the over to face - 4/75 after that. Manjrekar took over from Srikkanth in the short on side position, Srikkanth had left the field, looks to be Ganguly acting as sub. Manjrekar wasn't able to prevent another two to Waugh though. Final ball of Prabhakar's over, Waugh tried to play another to the on side, and missed - it took him on the pads, looked to be going on to the stumps, and the appeal was answered in the affirmative. = Waugh LBW Prabhakar 15 5/77 @13:55 Healy came in at number 7, to the non strikers end with Kapil bowling to Jones. Kapil bowled his first no ball in this over. 5/78 after that over. Healy pushed through the covers for a single from his first ball from Prabhakar. Jones played out the rest of the over. Prabhakar now has 12-2-2-36. Kapil bowled a maiden to Healy, then Jones took a couple from Prabhakar. Next over, Healy attempted to cut apil, to a ball that really didn't get up much, got an edge - top edge, somehow getting the bat under the ball, through to Pandit, and six down. = Healy C Pandit B Kapil Dev 1 6/81 @14:13 That gives Kapil 391 test wickets, and brings Hughes to the crease. no further action in the over, a wicket maiden, 6/81. A couple of tight overs followed, then Jones took four and three through the on side from Prabhakar's bowling, and Hughes followed that by pulling for four from the same over. 6/94. Srinath replaced Kapil (17-8-2-21), and bowls to Jones. He bowled one no ball in the over, then Jones drove to long off for three, to retain the strike against Prabhakar. 6/98. Jones 28, Healy 4, Extras 12. Jones brought up the hundred with another three driven straight, but slightly on the on side this time. 6/101. Hughes hooked a bouncer later in the over for a single. Jones swung (attempted hook) at a bouncer next ball, missed, but there was a big caught behind appeal - the ball came from Jones cap, was nowhere near the bat or gloves (whatever Bill Lawry thinks). Jones is not wearing a helmet, just a cap. Srinath continues to Hughes, who seems to be playing confidently enough, and safely enough - hitting at only the bouncers, and playing those well. A maiden over to Hughes, 6/102. That's drinks. T4, Aus v Ind, D1, tea Half way through the day, Australia after having been sent in are 6/102, with Jones and Hughes at the crease, Jones on 31, Hughes 5 (extras 12). For India, Kapil, Prabhakar and Tendulkar have two each, the only other bowler has ben Srinath, who has bowled just a few overs - Tendulkar only bowled 4. Prabhakar continued after the drinks break, bowling to Jones who played just one attacking shot in the over, but straightto Manjrekar, and no runs. Still 6/102. Raju replaced Srinath next over, justa two over spell from Srinath (after his initial 3 over spell). To bowl to Hughes, Raju is probably a good idea, Hughes will probably not be quite as confident against spin. Hughes got away from the bowling with a leg bye. For Jones, Raju has a slip, and very short cover (or point). Jones turned the penultimate ball of the over around the corner for a quick one, an LBW appeal followed against Hughes, but not out. Hughes taken on the back pad, close, but possibly going down leg side. The TV has gone to the races (yet again) - Chan 9 are hopeless. Srinath switched ends and replaced Prabhakar who has had a lengthy spell. Jones played a nice shot through square leg for four from the first delivery, just before the TV came back (fortunately a short race...). Jones chopped one into the ground, and was fortunate not to have dragged it back onto his stumps, it bounced well over them. 6/108 after the 46th over. Raju threw one down leg side, Hughes attempted to sweep, missed, and Pandit tried for the stumping. Hughes foot didn't ever leave the crease, and there was no appeal, though Hughes did end up down on his hands & knees. 6/108, Jones 36, Hughes 5, extras 13. Srinath bowled a wide one, that Jones cut, just wide of Sidhu, and to the boundary to take Aust to 6/112. Hughes turned the first ball of Raju's next over around the corner for an easy single, his first run from the bat off Raju (in fact, his first from other than the hook/pull shot). Jones came down the pitch, then just pushed the ball to mid on for another single. Against Hughes, Raju has a slip, short cover, and short leg. Hughes swung one on leg stump, along the ground, past the square leg umpire, for a single. 6/115 after the over. 6/117 after Srinath's next over, Jones 41, Hughes 9, extras 13. Raju continues, and Jones commits suicide, coming one step down the pitch then driving from well on the off side into mid on, in the air, where Azharuddin leaned to his left, and pulled in a good catch. = Jones C Azharuddin B Raju 41 7/117 @15:10 Warne, who batted well in Sydney to help save the match, has been promoted above McDermott, Raju has slip, bat/pad, and short cover. Big LBW appeal from the second ball he faced - took the pad outside off stump, though he wasn't playing a shot, but it also straightened and would have missed off stump. 7/117 after the over. Hughes 9, Warne 0. Srinath beat Hughes past the outside edge first ball of the the next over. Next ball he played OK, then was beaten again. 107 and 131 are Australia's lowest first inning scores against India - both of those at the SCG. (Several low 2nd innings scores, 83 at the MCG the lowest, others at Delhi and Kanpur). Hughes played another pull, again played well, just for a single to retain the strike at the end of the over. 7/118. Hughes tried to sweep Raju from the first ball of the over, missed, and was taken on the front pad, which was well down the pitch. The appeal was turned down. A few balls later, and Hughes swept again, this time he contacted OK, hit it in the air, and over mid wicket (a short boundary) for six. Next ball he just defended, and the last of the over. 7/124. Hughes is now 16, Warne 0, Extras 13. Srinath started the next over with a full toss to Warne, who pushed it out through mid wicket to open his scoring with a three. Hughes chipped one, just over the in field, safely (though not something he'd want to repeat too often), for a single. Warne was beaten by one going just down the off side. 7/128 after the over. For Raju to Hughes, the short cover has gone, and there's an extra fielder out on the on side boundary. Hughes tried another big sweep, bashed it hard right into the side of Srikkanth's helmet - Pandit attempted to catch the rebound as it went back past, but missed, Vengsarker cleaned up, but Hughes was not thinking of a run, but of Srikkanth's health. Srikkanth left the field, possibly only alive because of the helmet, that was a very hard bash into the head. No volunteers to take over at short leg, so Mandjrekar came in to short cover, and fielded the final ball of the over. Kapil came back to replace Srinath (10-2-0-26), Kapil now bowling from the other end from his initial spells. He'll find it harder to get out swing from this end, that is, if there's any swing left in the ball. This was a fairly innocuous maiden to Warne, who had no problem with it. Manjrekar continues at silly mid off with Raju bowling to Hughes, Hughes is just defending so far this over, and through to the end. 7/128. Kapil continues to Warne, two slips, gully, and short cover (Raju). Warne defended through the over - the last ball flying from the pad to Raju, which was followed by an appeal, probably for LBW. Raju continues for the last over before tea - first ball turned past Hughes bat, and bounced away from Pandit. Next ball was defended, then one from the pad ran past leg stump. Hughes swept, and took a single. For Raju to Warne, someone (Tendulkar?) is in at short leg, Warne attempted a big sweep (reasonable tactic that), but missed. The final ball he just defended. At tea, 7/129, Hughes 18, Warne 3, Extras 13. T4, Aus v Ind, D1, 5th hour At tea, after having been sent in, Australia are 7/129, with Hughes on 19, and Warne 3, the batsmen at the crease. Kapil continues, bowling to Hughes - Srikkanth still off the field, looks to be Amre replacing him (probably was the first time he was off too, now I think about it more rationally). Hughes defended the first few balls, then hooled a bouncer from Kapil to the boundary for four. Kapil put a fieldsman back on the boundary, then bowled another short one, which Hughes just ignored. Hughes 22, Warne 3, Extras 13, 7/133 At the northern end, Raju continues to Warne, who just defends the first ball back to Manjrekar at silly point. No short leg. TV vanishes to the races again. Warne pushed one fine around past the keeper, Vengsarkar chased, and the batsmen took three leg byes. Just those from the over - 7/136. Kapil now to bowl to Warne who tried to lift it over gully, but missed. Warne let the next one go, then played the next off the back foot through the covers for four, a nice shot. Last ball of the over, Warne just edged into the slips, bouncing well in front of Vengsarkar. 7/140. After defending a few balls from Raju's next over, Hughes attempted the sweep again, but missed. A leg bye was taken after the ball rebounded from his pad. Warne defended one ball, then charged Raju, took a big swing, missed, the ball went through to Pandit who removed the bails, with Warne unable to get his bat back. = Warne St Pandit B Raju 7 8/141 @16:14 McDermott came in to replace Warn, and the TV vanished to the races again, but went to the non strikers end as the wicket finished the over. Kapil continues to Hughes, Hughes continuing to defend, for the first balls, then he swung one to the mid wicket boundary, wide of Manjrekar for four. 8/145. Hughes goes back to defending again for a couple more balls, then another short one tempts Hughes again, but this time he missed and was taken on the shoulder. McDermott simply let the first ball of Raju's next over go past, and that was good (or poor) judgement, as the ball just went past the stumps (quite close to off stump). McDermott then looked to be not sur whether he wanted to attack or defend, but wasn't able to take a run, still 8/145, Hughes 26, McDermott 0, Extras 17. Kapil kept the ball up for most of the next over, and Hughes just defended, until the last ball of the over, that Kapil just dropped in a little short, Hughes pulled again, but this time in the air, and directly to Manjrekar who was waiting on the boundary for this shot. = Hughes C Manjrekar B Kapill Dev 26 9/145 @16:36 Witney is the last man, with a highest score of just 7, to the bowlers end as Raju comes in to McDermott. McDermott just pushed the first into the on side, but they didn't take a run, then cuts the next from in front of the stumps, but doesn't beat Prabhakar at backward point. McDermott came down the pitch, attempted to hit straight, but mised, and was bowled. = McDermott B Raju 0 10/145 @16:38 = Whitney Not Out 0 = Extras 17 = Overs 66.4 All Out 145 = O M W R N W = Kapil 23 11 3 33 1 0 = Prabhakar 18 3 2 55 0 0 = Srinath 10 2 0 26 6 0 = Tendulkar 4 2 2 10 2 0 = Raju 11.4 7 3 11 0 0 = ---------------------------------------------------------------------- T4, Aus v Ind, D1, Stumps Australia after being sent in were dismissed for 145 half way through the final session. Jones 41, Kapil 3/33, Raju 3/11. Srikkanth came out with Sidhu to open for India, and tool the first ball from McDermott. Srikkanth tookk a single from the second ball down to backward square leg. Sidhu then took two in the same area. The final ball of the over was fast, chest high, Sidu just fended it away towards the slips, but safely enough. Whitney came in from the other end, and managed to beat Srikkanth past the outside edge from consecutive balls. 0/3 after this maiden over. McDermott managed to beat Sidhu as well, getting much more pace and bounce than the Indian bowlers were able to, Sidhu took another single. Whitney bowled to Sidhu for the first time in his second over, first ball was played with the pad, but pitched well outside leg stump. Sidhu managed a thick outside edge, between 3rd slip and gully, and to the 3rd man boundary for four. 0/8 after four overs. The first extra came in McDermott's next over, a no ball. McDermott ended what was otherwise a maiden over with a bouncer that Srikkanth didn't play all that well, duncking under it quite late. 0/9. Sidhu took just a single from the final ball of Whitney's next over, after a reasonablish LBW appeal was denied (sensibly). 0/10 after 6. Sidhu 8, Srikkanth 1, extras 1. Next over from McDermott, Healy dived to his left to save one that swung way down leg side afte it passed the batsman. Not many have been swinging in this little period, though many balls have been too short to have a chance. Still 0/10 after 7. Srikkanth doubled his score from the first ball of the eighth over, a single to fine leg. Sidhu took two, then got one from Sidhu's body into the slips. Srikkanth took another three from McDermott's next over, pushed slowly down to deep, wide, mid on, Warne had to come from cover to field. Another no ball in the over doubled the extras total. 0/17 after 9. Srikkanth played through slips down to the third man boundary for his first four. Border reacted by dropping a man back out of the slips. Next ball, Whitney appealed for LB, but the ball certanly pitched outside leg, and the batsman took a leg bye - best Indian opening partnership of the series. Srikkanth took a big swing at the first ball of McDermott's next over out backward of point to the boundary, then drove through mid on, where Hughes chased and fielded right on the boundary, but wasn't able to prevent four being run (Srikkanth was looking to start for a fifth). McDermott threw another short one in, a bit down te leg side, Srikkanth attempted to hook, but just got a glove to it, it then balooned through to Healy who took the catch. Srikkanth wasn't happy with the decision, claiming it hit his arm above the glove. = Srikkanth C Healy b McDermott 17 1/30 @17:24 That ended the over after which Hughes came on to replace Whitney, and started with a yorker to Sidhu who took a single from the second ball. Manjrekar opened his account with a two forward of square leg. Srikkanth's wicket was Healy's 100th test catch. Manjrekar was taken on the pad, appeal, and out - that was plumb. = Manjrekar LBW Hughes 2 2/33 @17:28 Vengsarkar came in at 2 down, Hughes has 3 slips, gully, short point, and short leg. Vengsarkar took a single from the only ball left in the over. McDermott continued, bowling to Vengsarkar now - Vengsarkar just let one go that came back and couldn't have been far wide of the off stump. Next one was shortish, and Vengsarkar made a complete mess of it, it was a good ball, dangerous, but not a bouncer under the "one bouncer' rule by any means. Next ball was well up, Vengsarkar just defended, Sighu 11, Vengsarkar 1, 2/34. Hughes continues to Sidhu who hadn't faced a ball in a while, and wasn't able to score from this over, which was another quite good one. Vengsarkar took three, pushed straightish, just wide of McDermott's follow through - Warne had to run back from cover to field. Sidhu took a single to fine leg, then Vengdarkar played one directly to Jones at point, where Jones let the ball go through his legs, and Vengsarkar took two. Another couple of singles, and 2/42 at the end of the over, which probably should be the last McDermott bowls for a while. Sidhu took another two behind square from Hughes next over, then defended the rest of the over, Vengsarkar 7, Sidhu 15, 2/44. Vengsarkar then took a single to reduce the deficit to exactly 100 from the first ball of Whitney's new spell. McDermott 8-2-1-25 in his spell. Whitney's final ball of the over beat Sidhu, maybe took the edge, but didn't carry through to Healy. Hughes continues to Vengsarkar, Boon has gone from short leg to short backward square, with Border in at short cover, plus two slips and a gully. This was a maiden over, still 2/45. There shouldn't be many overs left now, just two will fit before 18:00 (Adelaide time), but there are probably a couple more beyond that to make up the required number. Whitney continued, beating Sidhu first ball, then getting a short one to lift, up past the bat. Still 2/45 after another maiden, and apparently just two overs left now, that is, just one will be required after the scheduelled close of play which will come during the next over. Sidhu 15, Vengsarkar 8, extras 3, 2/45. Hughes continued to Vengsarkar, who after defending a few, pushed one back to Hughes, who fielded one hand then threw at the stumps, but the ball bounced over them - Vengsarkar would have been safe anyway. That ended another maiden over, and stumps were drawn. So, Sidhu not out 15, Vengsarkar not out 8, 3 extras, 2/45. McDermott 8-2-1-25 Whitney 7-2-0-13 Hughes 5-3-1-6. In the day's play 12 wickets for 190 runs, not exactly a typical Adelaide test day. A very good day for India, the decision to send Australia in, strange as it seemed, seems to have paid off. T4, Aus v Ind, D2, 1st hour At 2/45, India resumed their first innings chasing Australia's mighty score of 145, made after having been sent in with the aid of some good bowling and inept batting. Whitney bowled bowled the first over of the day to Sidhu, who took a single, then Vengsarkar played out the rest of the over. McDermott resumed from the other end, beat Sidhu first ball, then Sidhu turned the fourth ball forward of square for another two, and drove the final ball back along the pitch where McDermott picked up well. India 2/49, Sidhu 17, Vengsarkar 10, extras 3. The fifty came up from the first ball of the next over, driven by Sidhu to long off for three, then Vendgarkar took another two into the off side, and another one behind square, scoring this morning is coming at a much more rapid pace than last night. 2/55. Sidhu 20, Vengsarkar 13. Second ball of McDermott's next over, Vengsarkar got a thick edge, pushed down, but not reaching the ground before it arrived in Waugh's hands at second slip. = Vengsarkar C Waugh B McDermott 13 3/55 @11:15 Azharuddin came in next and played out the rest of McDermott's over, surviving an LBW appeal from the final ball (well over the top). Sidhu attempted a drive from Whitney, was beaten past the outside edge, played well inside it. Whitney bowled a no ball late in the over, that Sidhu pushed back past the bowler, and ran one from. To Azharuddinm Whitney has two slips and two gullies, plus Boon at short leg. 3/56. McDermott to Sidhu also has 2 slips & 2 gullies, and Boon, this was another maiden, the final ball keeping a bit low, and reaching Healy on the second bounce. Sidhu 21, Azharuddin 0, 3/56. Azharuddin got off the mark with a quick, but safe, single into the covers from the first ball of Whitney's next over. Two more to Sidhu ended the over. 3/59. To Azharuddin, McDermott has two slips and just one gully, but with Border at leg gully, as well as Boon at bat pad. Another maiden. Sidhu took the first bundary of the morning from Whitney's next over, then was beaten the next ball, and played out the rest of the over. Sidhu now 27, and India 3/63. McDermott bowled a bouncer to Azharuddin that wasnt' played all that well, then next ball was well up, Azharuddin decided to try and thrash it, but playd just inside the line - not a good (attempted) shot at all. A no ball followed a few balls later, the first extra of the day. Then McDermott got one on line, taking Azharuddin's pad low down, and just in line with off stump. = Azharuddin LBW McDermott 1 4/64 @11:43 Hughes replaced Whitney at the other end, bowling to Sidhu, with Tendulkar at the non striker's end. Hughes first couple of balls were definitely of the warm up variety, then just as Hughes bowled his third, more on line as it turned out, Sidhu noticed a seagull fly across and pulled away - the umpire called dead ball. After that ball was bowled again, Hughes next took Sidhu on the pad. A very confident (and loud!) appeal was turned down, the ball would probably have gone past the leg stump. No score from the over. Tendulkar received his first delivery from McDermott, played it safely down into the gully area, then the next from the middle of the bat to Jones in the cover area. He opened his scoring with a very quickly run two to backward square, just getting home before the throw (safely home, Healy didn't bother removing the bails). A cut to the backward point boundary completed the over, Tendulkar 6, Sidhu 27, extras 4. 4/70. First ball of Hughes next over, a short one, Sighu got his bat up to attempt to fend it away, but just got the shoulder of the bat to the ball, which flew high, giving Healy an easy catch running forward. = Sidhu C Healy B Hughes 27 5/70 @11:55 I doubt Kapil would have wanted to be in batting before the end of the first hour today, but he is - the first ball he played from his thigh pad into the leg side, next one was even shorter, Kapil turned away from it, and took the ball on his upper arm. Another shortish one followed, but this was wide of off stump, and simply allowed past. Hughes continues to bowl short, next Kapil just dropped down on to the on side, well short of Boon, then for the last ball, Hughes finally pitched one up, which Kapill had no problem defending back to the bowler. Drinks. T4, Aus v Ind, D2, Lunch India, chasing Australia's 145 are 5/70 half way through the first session, with Tendulkar on 6, and Kapil Dev yet to score. McDermott has 3, and Hughes 2, the only other bowler has been Whitney. McDermott continued with a bouncer to Tendulkar, then got the next onto the pads of Tendulkar, who was given out. This one looked the most doubtful of the LBW's in the match so far, just might have been a bit towards leg stump, but that's no help to Tendulkar. = Tendulkar LBW McDermott 6 6/70 @12:04 McDermott has two men on the leg side short, as well as two slips and a gully for Prabhakar, who assumed he was going to get a bouncer but didn't - and was taken just above the pad. McDermott bowled a no ball to follow that - a short one. A later ball was well up, Prabhakar played late, and just hit the ground, the ball went past both bat and stumps. McDermott then bowled another bouncer, and was called no ball from square leg. I'm not sure about that - not that it wasn't short enough, but the first ball was a no ball, I'm not sure if thats hould count as a "ball" for the purposes of the two bouncer law (but then I haven't seen it, just heard about it). Hughes to Kapil dev, and Kapil gets his first run, into the on side. Kapil 1, Prabhakar 0, extras 6, 6/73 after 35 overs. Kapil took singles early in each of the next couple of overs - Hughes was called from square leg for two bouncers to Prabhakar, then Prabhakar opened his scoring for the innings with a three, and Kapil took another single. Kapil 4, Prabhakar 3, 6/80. First ball of McDermott's next over, looked to be a confident LBW appeal against Kapil, but Kapil had edged it into his pad, and the appeal was stifled. Kapil also wasted no time indicating he'd hit it. McDermott followed with a no ball. Kapil took a single, and Prabhakar another three. McDermott bowled another no ball, this one got up and hit Kapil on the hand. 6/85 after this over, Kapil 5, Prabhakar 6, extras 8. Prabhakar took two twos from Hughes, then Hughes got a slow one on line, and took Prabhakar on the pad, appeal was turned down, that was a very very close one. 6/89. Whitney came back to take over from McDermott next over (McDermott 17-5-4-43). Whitney has three slips and a gully for Kapil Dev - and Boon at bat pad of course. This was a maiden, just one ball beat Kapil, slanted across him, the others weren't much. Prabhakar took four from a wide one from Hughes next over - Hughes has a field set for short pitched bowling, one man just behind square, another on the boundary at deep backward square. Prabhakar followed his four with another two, nicely driven. Another single brought Kapil on strike for thefinal ball of the over, a slow full toss, waist high, that Kapil just pushed into the covers. 6/96, Prabhakar 17. Warne got his first opportunity of the match when he came on to replace Hughes after a maiden from Whitney. Kapil took two from Warne's first ball, which was well up, abot yorker length. Next ball was even further up, a full toss, which Kapil had no problem with at all, four through mid wicket. 6/102 after the over, with Kapil on 11. Prabhakar took a single from Whitney's next over, so was on strike for Warne's next over. After surviving an LBW appeal, which couldn't really be given out, he took three. 6/106. Just one run to prabhakar from Whitney's next over, which was almost the last before lunch - the umpires just made it into position before the clock moved to 13:00. Prabhakar took anothe single from this over, and Kapil played out the last two balls. At lunch, 6/108, Kapil Dev 11, Prabhakar 23, extras 8. T4, Aus v Ind, D2, 3rd hour At 6/108, India can't be too happy with their batting - no more than Aust. Kapil came out much moe agressively than he had been before lunch, taking three consequtive fours from Whitney, the final from a full toss, all good shots. Kapil 23, Prabhakar 27 India 6/126 Extras 10. Four fours & two no balls since lunch. The 50 partnership is also up. Two to Prabhakar from McDermott were the first runs in the session the batsmen actually needed to run for. With Kapil still looking to attack Whitney, Boon has been pushed back onto the boundary just behind square - the fine leg is also back there. The bouncer we all knew was coming came - Kapil turned his backk on it, let it hit the back of his shoulder - Kapil didn't take the offered leg bye. He drove at Whitney's next ball, but only to Border at mid off, and the over ended a maiden. Prabhakar took another four from McDermott's next over, a ball misdirected towards leg stump that was well played out towards square leg. 6/132, Kapil Dev 23, Prabhakar 33. Kapil ran three to the long part of the ground from Whitney's next over - there were probably four there had they hurried. Prabhakar played out the next few balls, and then was given out LBW - ball pitched just on leg stump, and straightened a bit, probably just hitting towards the top of off stump. = Prabhakar LBW Whitney 33 7/135 @14:06 Pandit in next, to face just one ball from Whitney before the end of the over. Healy tried an LBW appeal against Kapil first ball of McDermott's next over - bit no-one else bothered, the ball was well down the leg side, a leg bye was taken. McDermott bowled a yorker to Pandit first ball, which was played quite well by Pandit - who just defended McDermott's next ball. Kapil pulled the first ball of Whitney's next over to the boundary, just out of the reach of Boon who was late starting the chase. Next ball, another, hit much finer, and just a single to McDermott at fine leg. Pandit opened his scoring with an easy single just pushed to the off side. Boon goes back to the boundary (was up at short leg for Pandit's one delivery). Kapil attempted a cross between a cut and a pull - ended up just banging it into the pitch, from where it rolled back to the bowler. 7/142. McDermott beat Pandit with a good ball first ball of his next over, just moving away to beat the outside edge of Pandit's bat, which was just trying to defend the ball. McDermott ended the over with a bouncer, well over Pandit. Still 7/142. Kapil took an easy single at the start of Whitney's next over. After surviving a meaningless half LBW appeal, Pandit took a quick single, now 7/144, just one behind. Kapil attempted to swing the last ball of the over, which was well down leg side, away to the boundary, but missed completely. Pandit didn't attempt to even the scores in McDermott's next over, which was mostly directed wide of off stump. Kapil 32, Pandit 2, Extras 11, 7/144. First ball of Kapil's next over, he hit in the air to mid off, first bounce to Border, and a single taken, scores now level (though India with 3 wickets left). Just the one in the over, 7/145. Kapil swung one to fine leg for another single - India now in the lead at 7/146. Pandit played out the rest of McDermott's over without adding to the score. Whitney to Kapil, and a big LBW appeal, put pitched well outside leg, and probably hit the pad outside leg as well - not sure why Whitney bothered. Kapil took another single later - Pandit then dropped one at his feet, and turned quickly to make sue it wasn't going to go back onto his stumps, but it was OK. Pandit took his first run in ages a couple of balls later (after a no ball from Whitney). Kapil kind of half pulled to the wide fine leg boundary for four, that brought up the 150, now 7/153 as the over ends, and drinks come onto the field. Kapil 39, Pandit 3, 12 extras. McDermott 4-55. Whitney 1-63, Hughes 2-24. T4, Aus v Ind, D2, Tea India have an 8 run lead, with 3 wickets in hand, after sending Australia in and dismissing them for 145. Kapil on 39 has been the best of the Indian batsmen - though he's playing a somewhat risky innings, many of his runs have come from boundaries hit in the air. Hughes replaced McDermott to bowl to Pandit after drinks left the field. Pandit pushed the second ball behind square leg for two. Hughes has two slips & gully, short leg, and short cover to Pandit. Another one to mid on brought Kapil down to face Hughes for just one ball, a slower one that Kapil had no problem just defending back down the pitch. 7/156. Nothing from Whitney's next over, which wasn't much of an over to Pandit. Kapl attempted a big drive, perhaps looking to the on side, from Hughes next over, got a thick outside edge, and a boundary out behind point. Next ball Kapil was taken on the pad, going well down leg side, and no appeal. Kapil is now top score for the match (so far). Another four through square leg took him to 47. An easy single to Warne at mid on took the score to 165 for seven. Pandit ignored the last couple of balls of the over - the last well wide of leg stump, India's lead is now twenty. Kapil drove Whitney outtowards the deep long on boundary, and ran four to bring up his fifty. 9 4's 76 balls 143 minutes for his 52. A seagull flew across the pitch just as Whitney was about to bowl, Kapil didn't bull away, but Whitney did - then threw underarm to Kapil who caught & returned it. Waugh fielded well to save a probable boundary in the repeat of the delivery. 7/169 after Kapil didn't bother to take a single from a ball he played outto square leg. Hughes is still down leg side to Pandit, who attempted to glance it away, but missed. Pandit played the next into the covers, then ducked under a bouncer, a delivery Pandit doesn't seem to have any trouble with. He took a single to mid wicket. Hughes bowled a bouncer to Kapil, who hooled at it, got just an edge, which flew over Healy, and down to the boundary near the sightscren, slightly on the off side. Hughes followed that with a slower ball, Kapil drove at it, got a bit of an outside edge, and directly to Border at a slightly shortish cover. = Kapil Dev C Border B Hughes 56 8/174 @15:06 Raju out at number 10, to the non strikers end, as McDermott replaced Whitney after Hughes over (which ended with the wicket). Whitney 25-6-1-66 so far. Big LBW appeal, McDermott against Pandit, looked probably just going down leg side. Pandit swung the next one down to fine leg for an easy single. Raju opened his scoring from the firstball he faced, a single, to retain the strike, 8/176, with Pandit on 8, Raju 1, and extras 12. Hughes continued to Raju, he second ball was short, Raju ducked, but ducked late. Raju took a single next ball, Jones threw, missed, (Pandit would have been in), and the batsmen took an overthrow. Boon unsighted Healy, then missed the throw. Raju took another three from a thick edge wide of second slip down to 3rd man. Hughes had 2 slips, square short gully, silly cover, and short leg. Same to Pandit, who only had one ball to face. 8/181. McDermott to Raju - edge directly to Taylor at first slip, chest high, in and out ... he dove to try and take the rebound, but missed, the ball bounced before it went into Healy's glove - the batsmen took a single! Pandit took two behind square, Hughes ran around from fine leg to pick up and return. Another single took the lead to 40. Raju took another 2 to third man, 8/187, Pandit 11, Raju 9. For Hughes, Border has a third man now, needing to keep the lead down as much as possible. Pandit took a single in that area. Raju took a quick single to Border in the covers, Border's throw missed. Another single to backward square next ball. Raju tried a swing at one a bit wide, and short - but missed. 8/190 after the over. Pandit drove slowly into the covers, wide of Border who had to dive to save the ball - but the batsmen were still able to take two by the time Border recovered and picked up the ball. Pandit tried a pull from a short one, got a top edge, and the ball flew to square leg - Boon just had to run back a bit to take a well judged catch. = Pandit C Boon B McDermott 15 9/192 @15:29 Srinath in last, joins Raju who is on 10. The batsmen changed ends, but it was the last ball of the over, so Srinath is on strike to Hughes. Srinath defended well initially, then pushed the bat at one just moving away past off stump, and past the outside edge. Srinath took a single from a full toss, he just pushed into the covers. 9/193 McDermott looking for his 6th wicket, almost had it, when Srinath played form the bottom edge, into the ground, and wide of the stumps. back to Healy. Next ball Srinath defended, as he did the next. Srinath drove through mid off, Border dove but missed, then had to get up and chase, Border picked up just inside the boundary, but wasn't able to prevent the batsmen running five. Raju received a shortish ball that he attempted to get under - but couldn't get low enough, taking the ball just on the glove in front of his face, the ball dropped safely. Hughes to Srinath who swung it away towards fine leg, the ball fell safely, and Srinath took a single. Raju then brought up the two hundred with another single. Hughes bowled another short one to Srinath, rising into the chest area - Srinath just pushed it down into the off side. Big LBW appeal from Hughes against Srinath, a slower ball, Srinath was forward, but that one was close. Srinath then took three to mid on. 9/203. Raju 11, Srinath 10. McDermott still bowling, in what should be the tea interval, if it weren't that 9 wickets were down. Srinath defends the fist ball. And the second, he looks solid against balls pitched up and on line. Next ball a yorker, that he managed to dig out as well. One more defensive shot, then McDermott threw in a fast shortish one, Srinath attempted to bull, but just got it on the hand, and perhaps into the chest. Next ball was also short, but not bouncing, and Srinath just defended. A maiden over, 9/203. Warne came on to replace Hughes, bowling to Raju, who took a single from a short wide one. Srinath was beaten outside off stump by his first from Warne, and then defends one pitched about on leg stump. Srinath then took three from one he ran downn towards 3rd man, from another wide one from Warne. Raju defended the final ball. 9/207. McDermott continues for his 30th over, the 77th of the innings. Srinath defended, and McDermott followed through to make sure no run was taken. Srinath takes one from the next ball, which he defended into the covers. Raju took a single from one rising to chest high, that he managed to turn to fine leg. Srinath defended the last ball of the over 9/209, Raju 13, Srinath 14. Warne continues to Raju, a little turn there, but Raju had no problem. He defended a couple more, then drove in the air over Border at mid on, the batsmen ran three, Raju just home. Srinath defended one ball, then attempted to cut the last of the over, but played under it. 9/212, Raju 16. McDermott continued to Raju, who ran the ball throgh the slips area for a single, then Srinath took another. Raju kind of waved the bat at one going past off stump, high, but pulled away. Next ball was pitched further up, and this time Raju didn't pull away, but was beaten. Raju played wide of Waugh and down to third man again, this time for two as Warne picked up. 9/216, Raju 19, Srinath 15. Slight delay while the Indian basmen get a drink and some attention before Warne continues, this will be the second last over before tea will be taken. Srinath took a single to deep mid on from a full toss. Next ball spun well past Raju's bat. 9/217 after Raju played out the rest of the over. Mark Waugh came on for what should be te last over before tea, he attempted a wide bouncer, Srinath attempted to cut, but missed. Next ball Srinath just defended, ball was well up and on line. Srinath played to mid on, then from the edge to Border at second slip, but bouncing well in front. Another wide one, another attempted cut, but just under the ball. Same again - maiden over. 9/217. Looks like they'll get one more over in, Waugh gets through his deliveries quicker. Warne to Raju with just one minute left, Raju defends, then allows a couple go past off stump. A full toss he played to mid on, then the last ball he played from the edge, into te ground, and then to Taylor at slip. 9/217 at tea. Raju 19, Srinath 17, Extras 12. T4, Aus v Ind, D2, end of Indian innings Whitney in after tea to Srinath, who takes an easy single first ball. India have a lead of over seventy now. Raju then got one fine off the pad to fine leg, they ran three leg byes. Srinath pushed into the covers and set off for a run, Raju was a bit late responding, but made it safely. Raju beaten outside the line of off stump to complete the over at 9/222. Raju 19, Srinath 18, Extras 15. Waugh continues from the other end - bowls a wide one, Srinath swings, misses, through to Healy. Next ball, well up, dug out. Bouncer next ball, Srinath attempts to hook from outside off stump, and really just chest high - misses, and caught behind appeal turned down. Srinath drove at the next, and took three to long on. Raju just stepped inside one going a bit down leg side about waist high. Another wide ball, ignored by Raju, ended the over. 9/225, Srinath 21. Whitney now bows the 85th over of the innings, the new ball will be due after this over. Kapil opened the attack for India, bowling initially to Taylor. Kapil asked for a caught behind after a short delay to allow the birds to go away - no-one else was interested. The over ended a maiden. 0/0 after one. Taylor 0, Marsh 0. Prabhakar came on from the southern end, bowling to Marsh for his first ball, which was wide, and a bit short. Marsh attempted the cut, but hit over it, getting just a bottom edge into the ground, then out to point. The next ball swung in, and kept very low, no bounce. The Australian score opened with a leg bye. First ball from Prabhakar to Taylor didn't bounce, through to Pandit on almost the third bounce. The final ball of the ovwer was way outside off stump. 0/1. Kapil now bowls to Marsh for the first time, first ball outside off stump, the second Marsh pushes out to mid off. Three maidens to start the innings, just one leg bye on the scoreboard, though Marsh looks to be attempting to score. Taylor took two past Srikkanth at short leg, bouncing through Srikkanth's legs for the first runs from the bat. Taylor took one to Azharuddin at short leg, Azharuddin didn't pick up cleanly, and Marsh wanted a second. Taylor sent him back - Azharuddin's throw was very high, Pandit had to jump, then throw it at te stumps - he hit, with Marsh just fractionally out of his grond, given not out (as it should be). Prabhakar followed that with two bouncers, though the first wasn't very high - the second was called no ball. Marsh then played a nice cover drive to the boundary. 0/9 after the fourth, Marsh 4, Taylor 3, Extras 2. Kapil Dev to Taylor, first ball just played back down the pitch. Next ball, Kapil appealed for LBW (pitched outside leg), Srikkanth appealed for a bat pad catch, but the ball was nowhere near the bat. Another maiden, still 0/9. Prabhakar to Marsh, and Marsh takes a single. Attendance today was 15900 approx, Just over 15100 yesterday, total so far just over 31000. Taylor played out the rest of the over, 0/10. Next ball he just watched through on the off side. Then Boon took a quick single to mid wicket. 1/11 after 7, Kapil 1 for 1. Prabhakar, bowling to Boon, has a silly mid off, in addition to the short leg, and slips cordon. Prabhakar seems unhappy to not have had an LBW appeal allowed, but te ball hit the pad outside the line of off stump, with Boon playing a shot. Prabhakar sends in a short one next. a fairly good over, 1/11 still, Taylor 3, Boon 1, extras 2. Taylor ran the last ball of Kapil's next over throgh slips for three. He then attempted to run himself (or Boon) out in Prabhakar's next ove, but was sent back, then clipped one through mid wicket for four. Prabhakar followed that with a bouncer. 1/18. Taylor 10, Boon 1. Another big LBW appeal from Kapil against Boon - that was a close one. Boon ran one down to third man, they took three, decided not to risk a fourth as Tendulkar threw in. 1/21, Tayor 10, Boon 4, extras 2. Boon drove Prabhakar straight, just on the on side, and took three as Azharuddin chased and returned. Taylor took an easy single to Sidhu at fine leg. Prabhakar looked to be trying to bowl a bouncer at Boon, but the ball went past Boon - down the leg side - about thigh high. Taylor took anouther single from the first ball of Kapil's next over. Boon drove straight again, for another three as Sidhu fielded. Another single to Taylor, then Boon let the last ball go. 1/30, Taylor 13, Boon 10. Taylor cut a short wide one from Prabhakar for four. Raju replaced Kapil with not many overs left to be bowled today, bowling to Boon. Boon took an easy single behind square leg. Raju continues around the wicket to Taylor, that over seemed to go very quickly - 1/35. It was a double change, with Srinath replacing Prabhakar. First ball to Boon, wide outside off stump, but more bounce than has been seen previously in this innings. The over got better as it went along, until the final ball which was a harmless bouncer. Boon wasn't really troubled though, allowing most balls to go past. Taylor would have plaed out a maiden from Raju, however Sidhu managed, somehow, to let the ball get away from him afte the last delivery, and the batsmen took an easy one after the mis-field. Taylor 18, Boon 11. Srinath is gong around the wicket to Taylor, the first ball yorker length. Taylor played it without trouble, and continued to play out the rest of the over. Srinath tried an LBW appeal from the last ball, no-one else bothered, with good reason. Raju comes in to Boon, after the batsmen used up a little time to help make sure this will be the last over of the day. Boon is intent on defence with fieldsmen all round the bat - slip, short gully, short cover, short leg. Boon played the last ball back to Raju, and the player left the field. Australia 1/36, still 44 behind, Taylor 18, Boon 11, 2 extras. T4, Aus v Ind, D3, 1st hour Australia were still 44 runs behind, with one down, when the day started, Prabhakar bowled the first over of the day to Taylor, who didn't score from it. Kapil Dev came on at the other end and bowled to Boon. Boon took a single from this over, Taylor 18, Boon 12, extras 2, 1/37. Boon drove, quickly, but withot power, fairly straight from the first ball of Prabhakar's next over, Shastri fielded well to prevent runs. Prabhakar bowled a short one that Boon went under, then a wide one that Boon cut to the boundary behind point. 1/41. Taylor opened his scoring for the day with a two driven through mid off, where Sidhu fielded, then again through covers for another two next ball. A cut followed for Taylor's first boundary of the day, 1/49 after Kapil's second over. Boon brought up Australia's 50 with a single in Prabhakar's next over. Just a single from Kapil's next over Taylor 26, Boon 18, 1/51. Prabhakar bowled a "bouncer" to Boon, who went down and swayed inside it - went past his lower back... Still 1/51 after the over. Singles followed from each of the next two overs. Raju attempted to pick up one hand at third man, but missed - the ball passed through a patch of seagulls, may have hit one - in any case, two extra runs were permitted. 1/56, Taylor 31. Srinath replaced Prabhakar after a 5 over spell (12-4-0-27), just a single to Taylor from Srinath's first of the day. Taylor turned Kapil square on the on side, both Raju & Tendulkar chased, and collided as they reached the ball together, then when Raju threw in, Tendulkar was still too close and got a (not too hard) hit on the shoulder from Raju's follow through after the throw - still just two runs. Another two came in the same area, but more directly to Tendulkar next ball. 1/61, Taylor 36. 50 partnership up on the last shot. Boon hasn't scored in quite a while. Well, he hadn't, Boon drove Srinath through extra cover for four from the second ball of the next over. Then he hooked a bouncer that actually did get up, into the ground, and square, for another four. 1/69, Boon 26. Raju replaced Kapil after 50 minutes or so of the day's play. The first runs from his bowling were three through the slips (slip) from Taylor, that Vengsarkar had to chase to third man. 1/72, Taylor 39. Just 2 slips and gully now for Srinath to Taylor, as Azharuddin realises that he needs to slow the scoring a little, attempt to frustrate the batsmen as he did in the first innings. Srinath also around the wicket to Taylor. A maiden over. Raju, bowling to Boon, has a slip, silly cover, and short leg. Srikkanth, from short leg, is getting plenty of fielding to do in theover, which ended another maiden, as drinks came on. Aust 1/72, still 8 behind, Taylor 39, Boon 26, extras 2. T4, Aus v Ind, D3, Lunch Srinath continued after the drinks break, with Australia still 8 runs in deficit, and still bowling around the wicket to Taylor. Another maiden over. Boon took a single early in Raju's next over, then Taylor took a very quick one from the last ball - hit direclyto mid off, but slowly - he was home before the throw passed the stumps. 1/74 Taylor 40, Boon 27. Taylor took one (leg bye) first ball from Srinath, who then went back over the wicket to Boon. Boon pulled, near the boundary, but there was a fielder there and just a single. 1/76 Raju still has three, plus the keeper, near the bat. Boon drove, wasn't going to take a run, but Kapil missed it, and allowed three - now 1/79 and just one behind. Taylor took the one a couple of balls later. 1/80, Taylor 41, Boon 31, extras 3. No change to the score in Srinath's next over, back around the wicket to Taylor. And no change in Raju's next over either, though it included one good top spinner that almost got through Boon's defence. Srinath switched back to over the wicket to Taylor next over. Taylor took one to fine leg. 1/81 half way through the hour, Taylor 42, Boon 31. Raju continues to Taylor who lofts the first ball over mid wicket to the boundary, well over Prabhakar at mid wicket. He took another single to square leg. Boon then cut, into the ground, and through a gap in the field to the boundary. 1/90, Taylor 47, Boon 35. Srinath is back around the wicket to Taylor, who was taken on the pad, leading to the first real appeal of the morning, but it was aimed well down leg side. Another maiden over. Boon got one from the edge, wide & short of Prabhakar at slip, and took three. 1/93, Boon 38. Kapil Dev came back to give Srinath a break. Srinath 10-6-0-11 -- incl 2 4's in one over. For Kapil, just one slip and a gully, and three saving one on each side. Boon took three to fine fine leg, a nice leg glance, first ball. Nothing else in the over. 1/96, Boon 41. Taylor still 47. Raju continues to Boon who drove through mid wicket for two. Taylor took a single from the start of Kapil's next over, his first run in some time. Boon then took another four forward of point (well forward), to bring up the Australian 100. A no ball added an extra run. Boon then cut behind point (to 3rd man) to bring up his 50. 1/108, Boon 51, Taylor 48, extras 4. Raju to Taylor has a slip and silly mid off - Taylor took a quick single to mid on. Three men back close for Boon. 1/109, Taylor 49. Taylor will have just this over to bring up his 50 before the lunch break, with Kapil to bowl it. No problem, a single behind square first ball, which also brings up the 100 partnership. Boon played out the rest of the over, to end a good session for Australia. Taylor 50, Boon 51, extras 4. 1/110. T4, Aus v Ind, D3, 3rd hour Apologies to r.s.c. readers, we had a power failure here this morning (before play, fortunately), and my news server didn't restart, so no news postings will have escaped yet this morning. With Australia having a 30 run lead (1/110, after their first innings of 145 all out, and India's 225), they resumed after lunch in a fairly good position. Prabhakar opened the attack after lunch, bowling to Taylor. No run from that one, Boon still 51, Taylor 50. Raju switched ends to bowl the second over of the session, with the breeze more behind him. Boon took a single first ball, then Taylor took another one. 1/112. Taylor pulled Prabhakar to the mid wicket boundary, along the ground all the way to the boundary - good shot. That was all that was taken from the over. 1/116. Raju followed with a maiden, in which Boon attempted to cut one from his stumps, and just managed to get enough bat onto it to get the ball away. Taylor took another three from Prabhakar, in the same area as last time, at the minute Boon seems more content to just watch the balls pass through to Pandit, but when he received one on leg stump, he turned it around to fine leg for a single. 1/120, Boon 53, Taylor 58. Boon cut Raju to the boundary, getting enough bat on that one. 1/124. Another boundary next over cut by Taylor to the boundary behind point. Azharuddin sent a man back to third man now. 1/128. Boon 57, Taylor 62. Just two to Taylor from Prabhakar's next over. 1/130 Raju's next to Boon was a maiden, then Taylor took two to fine leg from Prabhakar, and a single from the final ball of the over. 1/133. Taylor 67, Boon 57, extras 4. Another maiden from Raju, Boon cut another boundary, just reaching it before the chasing fielder in Prabhakar's next, which together with a no ball took the score to 1/138. Boon 61, extras 5. With Raju still in, and not many bouncers from Prabhakar, Taylor has replaced his helmet with a cap - Boon doesn't generally wear a helmet in any case (when he's batting), and hasn't been in this match. Taylor drove Raju through mid off to take his total to 70. 1/144 after Prabhakar's next over, Taylor 73, Boon 61, extras 5. Raju has switched to over the wicket to Taylor, and bowled another maiden. Boon drove Prabhakar through extra cover to the boundary , a very nice shot. Pandit thought Boon may have gotten an edge to one down the leg side, but it was just the pad, no-one else appealed, and Pandit's wasn't much of an appeal. He then pulled a slow short one, for another four. That's Australia's 150. The final ball of the over was slow, short, but well outside off stump, and Boon let it go past. 1/152, Boon 69. Taylor 73, extras 5. That's drinks. T4, Aus v Ind, D3, Tea Australia are more than 70 ahead now, with just one down. Srinath replaced Raju - Taylor cut a wide one erly, but Manjrekar fielded well at point and prevented runs. Taylor let a later ball go, one that came back towards the stumps - Pandit took it just outside the leg stump probably (certainly towards leg). A no ball was the first run added in the hour. 1/153. Raju came back at the other end, replacing Prabhakar. Boon took the first runs from the bat for the hour, with three through mid on - Sidhu's throw broke the stumps at the bowlers end, but Boon was well in. Boon got an edge to the first ball of the over from Srinath, Kapil threw himself to his left at gully, took te pace off it, but still allowed two, not sure if it carried to Kapil or not, but probably. Would have been a great catch if he'd held it. Boon cut in the air over Kapil later in the over, and another four. 1/162, Taylor 73, Boon 78, extras 6. Boon now has 1000 runs in tests against India (just the third Australian to do that, others are Border and Simpson). Taylor took two to third man from Raju - Raju getting some turn, back bowling around te wicket to Taylor, and pitching outside off stump. A single to Taylor, to square leg, then Boon had just one ball of the over to face. 1/165. Srinath is around the wicket to Taylor now, not much of an over really, not giving Taylor any trouble. Just a single from the final ball. 1/166. Azharuddin left Kapil in charge as he left the field - Raju continues bowling around the wicket to Taylor, who stepped back and tried to make room to cut - playing just under the ball which was just a couple of inches wide of off stump. Taylor then attempted a sweep, got a very fine bottom edge on it on his follow through, after the ball had come from the pad. Two runs. 1/168. Taylor 79, Boon 78, extras 6. Just a single to Boon from Srinath's next over, then nothing from Raju's next. Srinath was convinced he had Taylor caught behind - I'm not going to attempt to say if it was hit or not, can't tell from the TV, but I will say that the commentators went from "he's out" to "he missed it by a long way" as they viewed the replays, I couldn't say either of those. Next ball, Srinath threw one in short, Taylor took his eye from the ball and replaced it wth his jaw, he remains on the field, and still without a helmet - and Azharuddin returned. Maiden over from Srinath 1/169. Boon moved well forward to Raju, then just pulled the bat away as it spun past, but kept his back foot anchored. Next ball he drove to long won where Sidhu had to chase, and took three. Taylor then took a single from the next ball, around to fine leg where Tendulkar came in to field. 1/173 after that over. Taylor put a hemlet back on for Srinath, and took a single to square leg. Boon attempted a cut, but was well over it, not as much bounce as he'd expected. Boon then pulled from outside off stump, and going further away, the ball ended going over Sidhu's head at mid on, and Boon took two. Srinath's next ball was short again, rising to chest high, well bowled, but well played by Boon as well. Taylor 81, Boon 84, extras 6, 1/176. Taylor took one through mid wicket from Raju, Boon then stroke straight, fine of Sidhu who cased, but couldn't save the boundary. That's a lead now of 101. Another easy single to Sidhu, who's been pushed further back at mid on, there'll be a single there every time. 1/182. Srikkanth replaced Srinath, for what will be the last over before tea. The TV says he's right arm medium, but Pandit is up at the stumps, and he looks to be bowling spin. Boon took a single first ball. Taylor took another single from a full toss next ball. Boon played the next one, cautiously back down the pitch, then drove wide of mid on for three. Taylor got another full toss, but hit it directly to the fieldsman at extra cover. Then he just defended the final ball before tea. 1/187 at tea, with Taylor 83, Booy 93, extras 6, and 80 overs of the innings gone, just five more before the new ball will be due. T4, Aus v Ind, D3, 5th hour Boon cuts the first ball after tea, but just to the backward point fielder and no run. next ball he drives, also no run. Raju is continuing, and Boon eventually managed a single just pushed slowly to the on side. Taylor then took one the first ball he faced. 1/189 after the over, Boon 94, Taylor 84, 6 extras. That's a lead of 109 now, after India's 225 in response to Australia's 145 after being sent in. Srikkanth only had the one over, just before tea, Kapil Dev on to replace him after tea, he'll have just two overs before being able to take the new all, if he wants it. Taylor took a quick single, Boon didn't score from the balls he faced, a reasonable over, but both batsmen look fairly confident now. 1/190. Raju continues, around the wicket to Taylor, just a slip now. Taylor drove to mid on, took a quick single, Shastri picked up and threw down the stumps, but Taylor was well in. Again, no run to Boon in the remainder of the over - he may be thinking about his hundred. Again, Taylor took a single early from Kapil Dev's over, but this time, Boon managed a quick single into the off side after a few dot balls. Taylor then played from the outside edge through to the 3rd man boundary. 1/197 after this over, Taylor 91, Boon 95, extras 6. Raju continued in the 85th over, I would assume Azharuddin will take the new ball next over, he has to do something. Raju made one turn past Boon's bat, angled in, turned away, Pandit removed a bail, but Boon was well in. Pandit put the next down leg side, hit Boon outside leg stump, and was going further that direction - Raju appealed, no-one else bothered. No runs from the over. Kapil continues with the old ball, to Taylor, Prabhakar is off the field, which may have influenced this (sore back), and Raju is bowling fairly well. Taylor just played out the over, no runs, no danger. Boon took two from Raju to take his score to 97, and Aust to 199. Taylor played out another maiden from Kapil. Raju has a slip (Azharuddin) and very short cover (Manjrekar) for Boon. Boon waited for a widish one, then cut through point for four, for his hundred, and Australia's 200. That's Boon's 12th test hundred, and his fifth against India. Tendulkar on to replace Kapil Dev, to bowl to Taylor, who fell to Tendulkar in the first innings. Taylor watched the first through, then drove the next two, slowly, to the mid wicket fieldsman. Nothing from the next, then Taylor cut to point, where Manjrekar dove and fielded well. Next ball, pitched, spun, and took off to first slip, where Azharuddin took it. Nowhere near Taylor. Maiden over, Taylor still 91, Boon 101. 1/203. Raju continues to Boon, Boon took two to mid wicket after a few balls he just watched carefully, and then a quick single from the final ball. Tendulkar continues, bowling to Boon now, first ball takes Boon on the pads, someone says "How was .." then stops, it was well down leg side. Taylor clipped one down to fine leg, for a single, Tendulkar may have been trying for a leg side stumping, he tried the same thing against Taylor, this one got past the batsmen, and Pandit removed the bails, but he'd had to come back from very wide, and Taylor had time to get back. 1/207. Raju bowled another maiden to Boon, which was played with a very solid defensive bat, no real attempt to score at all - one he hit to mid wicket, the rest remained around the bat. Tendulkar continues to taylor. Pandit standing up (as he was before, obviously, given he attempted a stumping). Tandulkar bowled a no ball, Taylor ran it through third man for a single. Tendulkar followed with a no ball to Boon. Boon took a single to mid on, which brought up the 200 partnership. Taylor then got one away down leg side with the pad, and ran a leg bye. Boon belted the next into the covers, but directly to the field. 1/211, Taylor 92, Boon 106. Extras 8. Taylor attempted a big sweep against Raju, missed, Pandit didn't take cleanly, not that it mattered, taylor remained in his crease. Another maiden. Tendulkar to Boon: Boon drives, but directly to Srinath at mid off. Next ball, Boon drives again, squarer, but directly to Raju. Tendulkar around the wicket - Boon attempts a cut, misses. Boon simply defends against the final ball, another maiden. 1/211. Raju gets Taylor to come forward, and drive over the on side to the deep mid wicket boundary. Next ball, Taylor drives again, into the off side, and no run there. Third ball, defended very slowly into the off side. Fourth ball pitched down the leg side, turned square, but no run. Taylor attempted to push the next through the slips area, but couldn't get it past Azharuddin, and the final ball he just pushed out toi point, Taylor wanted a run, which wasn't there, Boon sent him back. That's drinks, at 1/215, Taylor 96, Boon 106, 8 extras. T4, Aus v Ind, D3, stumps Tendulkar continues after the drinks break, bowling to Boon on 106, with Taylor at the other end on 96, and Australia on 1/215. Tendulkar is around the wicket to Boon now, running between the umpire and the stumps. Pandit is still standing up, Tendulkar may be bowling off spin, that ball which was a bit short, and stayed low, turned that way. Pandit appealed for a catch behind, and didn't attempt the stumping quite quickly enough, Boon had time to get his bat down, just, before the bails were removed. (Pandit also didn't take it quite cleanly). Boon drove straight for three. Taylor had just one ball to face. Aust 1/218, Boon 109. Boon took a single from the first ball of Raju's new over, brings Taylor on strike, still needing another four for his hundred. Its worth noting that Taylor spent a long time in the 40's too, Boon reached his 50 first, then Taylor quickly overtook Boon in the 60's and 70's before slowing right up again. Taylor hasn't had a first class century at all this season. But he has now, a cut to the boundary forward of point for four. His eight'th test hundred. 9 4's, 296 balls, 384 minutes. This is his first century against India. Another hard hit to cover followed, but no run there. Tendulkar still around the wicket to Boon, delivering plenty of different kinds of balls. He managed to get a thick edge from Boon's bat, which flew just wide of Azharuddin at slip, then down to third man, Sidhu ran around to pick up, but Boon had three. 1/226, Boon 113, Taylor 100. Kapil is back on now, still with the old ball, 15 overs after the new one could have been taken. Boon drives through the covers, Amre chases, and attempts to prevet it going into the fence, but can't. Next ball down leg side, and Boon can't get bat onto it. No ball next, turned around the corner for a single. Kapil has now taken the new ball, wonder if Srinath will have it at the other end, or whether Tendulkar will take it? First ball with the new ball to Taylor, allowed past to Pandit. Second ball, Taylor cuts, in the air, and directly to Raju at backward point, who juggled it, but held it safely. = Taylor C Raju B Kapil Dev 100 2/231 @17:22 Border in at number four, allows his first ball past. Next ball down leg side, Border flicks at it but misses. That ends the first successful over of the day. The Boon/Border partnership fell just 15 runs short of the record 2nd wicket partnership for Aust against India, held by Bradman and Barnes (47-48). Srinath has come on to replace Tendulkar, getting just a little swing in his first couple of balls. Boon pushed a ball in the middle of the over, just into the on side, and ran a quick single. Border let a couple go past outside the off stump, too wide to bother with. The next ball, last of the over, was down leg side, moving in towards Border's stumps after it passed. That's the end of the TV coverage for today, the rest of what appears here is from the radio. Boon must have taken one while the radio was giving a news update, as Kapil bowls to Border, way down the leg side. Border ran one on the bounce into the slips, Tendulkar at 3rd slip prevented Border from getting off the mark. 2/235, Boon 119, Border 0. Srinath to Boon, one takes Boon on the pad, half appeal. 2/235 Kapil to Border, who gets off the mark, with what should have been a single, however Srinath mis-fielded and allowed a second. LBW appeal from the next ball, not out, and leg bye taken. 2/238 after the over, Boon 119, Border 2, 12 extras. Srinath to Border now - Border takes a single to move to three. To Boon, Srinath got one to swing in, takes Boon on the pads. Two slips, gully and short leg for Srinath to Boon. 2/239 after the over. Kapil continues to Border, with both Prabhakar and Vengsarkar off the ground (the latter with a headache apparently). Kapil appeals from the last ball, not out, and no run from the over. Srinath to Boon, still getting swing, Boon just defending, with less than 10 minutes left of the day. Boon played a shot at a full toss, but just to the field at square leg, Boon played another defensive shot next ball, and was called through for a single by Border, with Boon starting quite late. Kapil to Boon, Boon defends towards short leg, who missed it, Boon took a single. Border was beaten by the next one, just past the outside edge. He took two down to 3rd man a couple of balls later. 2/243, Border 5. Border took another single from the last ball of the over, now 6, and Boon 121. There will be just one over left today (the 91st of the day - but plenty of time to get it started before 18:00). Srinath around the wicket to Border. One bounced twice before it reached Pandit. Border is mostly content to just watch the balls through, he took a leg bye to take extras to 13, 2/245. Boon has just one ball to face, 2 slips, gully, short leg, silly mid off, and a third slip moves in, Boon defends onto the on side, don't want to think of a possible single. Australia at stumps, 2/245, Boon 121, Border 6, extras 13. That's a lead of 165, with 8 wickets in hand. Kapil has both wickets. T4, Aus v Ind, D4, 1st hour Australia started the fourth day 165 ahead, after being sent in on the first morning and collapsing for 145 due to some horrible batting, and then removing India for 225. They are 2/245 at the start of play, with Boon on 121 and Border just 6. Kapil bowled the first over for India, initially to Border who took just a single, and then to Boon. With Prabhakar still off the field, Srinath opened at the other end, and started around the wicket to Border, who took two. He then straight drove to near the deep long off boundary, and ran four as Azharuddin chased. Srinath went back over the wicket, and immediately appealed for LBW, one that just pitched on leg stump, but was going away past off. Border 13, Boon 121, extras 13. 2/252. Boon took a quick single from Kapil's next over, then almost had an overthrow. but that was all from that over. Srinath has 2 slips, a gully, and a short leg - quite deep really - for Boon.Boon allowed most of the balls past, then pushed one behind point for two, and allowed the final ball through to Pandit as well. Boon 124, Border 13, 2/255. Australia are going to want at least a hundred more today - preferably 150, and by tea if they can. Border started Kapil's third over of the day with two - Kapil has the same field for Border as Srinath had for Boon. Kapil is bowling well, and the occasional ball is keeping low. One there got between Border's bat and pad, just missed off stump - good ball. Border got away from the strike with a single next ball. Boon had just one ball left to play - 2/258. Border edged down to fine leg for a single from the first ball of Srinath's next over, then Boon turned the penultimate ball to square leg for another one. Boon just dropped one at his feet, but past the close field, and took a single, bring Border back onto strike against Kapil Dev. Kapil considers the ball to be out of shape, and asked for a change - the umpires measured it with their rings, then gave it back. Border turned the next forward of square for two easy runs. Last night Border looked set for a long innings, today I'm not so sure - usually if Border hangs around for about an hour, and is just 10 or so, he'll go on and get a few, when he comes out and starts scoring, he often gets out reasonably quickly, last night it was the former and today the latter. 2/263 after Kapil's over. Srinath bowled one ball to Boon, then gave the ball back to umpire Hair to be examined again, again it was returned unchanged. Boon took the first boundary of the day, driven nicely through extra cover from the last ball of theover. 2/267. Boon 130, Border 19. Kapil asks about the ball again after one delivery, demonstrating to McConnell just what he thinks is wrong, but still to no effect. Border played the next safely enough, then was beaten the ball after. He played the next with a vey solid bat, held right next to the pad - pushing the ball just into the off side, then pushed the next back to Kapil. No runs from that over. Boon attempted a pull from Srinath, missed, Srinah started to appeal for a catch behind, then realised that Boon was well over it. The next Boon got from a thick inside edge into his pads. A couple later he drove straight, slightly on the on side, and just beat Azharuddin to the boundary (which can't have done Azha's injured foot much good). Boon would have run four in any case. This is now Boon's highest test score against India. 2/271, Boon 134. Border just dropped one into the off side, and took off for a quick single, which they completed with ease. Boon took one too, turned to square leg, then a couple of balls later, Border took another. Kapil has 2 slips, gully, bat pad, and very silly mid off for Boon. Srinath has been taken off now, and Tendulkar brought on again (Srinath 26-9-0-44). Border watched the first very carefully, then drove the next through the covers for three. Pandit is standing back for Tendulkar today, and for Boon has just one slip (Vengsarkar). He induced Boon to attempt a drive, then made the ball move away to beat the outside edge. His next was directed down leg side, and may have been a bouncer - got only waist high, and Boon missed his attempted pull. He attempted the same kind of ball, which this time Boon just pushed into the on side, and took off for an easy single, just walking through. Pandit came around, and threw down the stumps at the bowler's end - by the time Boon realised there may be some danger, it was too late for him to recover. = Boon Run Out 135 3/277 @11:55 Jones came out to immediately face Kapil Dev, first ball he just pushed into the on side, then Kapil got one to move slightly, take the edge of Jones bat, and through to Pandit, who took a good catch. = Jones C Pandit B Kapil Dev 0 4/277 @11:58 Border is still there on 24, extras 13, drinks taken at the fall of Jones' wicket. T4, Aus v Ind, D4, lunch First ball, Kapil to Mark Waugh, ball takes pad, and maybe bat, and flies to Tendulkar at second slip, and Mark Waugh is out, but hard to tell just how - I'll assume caught... = Waugh C Tendulkar B Kapil Dev 0 5/277 @12:02 Healy in next, drove to mid off for three - Waugh must have been caught, the ball took the pad outside off stump, and may have been too high, and the umpire waited till after the catch was taken to raise his finger. Border took a single from the last ball of the over. Now 5/281, Border 25, Healy 3. Australia just over 200 ahead now. Tendulkar on again for his second over, Border cuts for a single. Just looking at a replay of Waugh again - Vengsarkar also obviously didn't appeal till after Tendulkar had taken the catch. Healy took another single, then Tendulkar was no balled, bowling to Border. 5/284. Border 26, Healy 4, extras 14. Kapil managed to get the inside edge of Healy's bat, onto his thigh pad, then back towards first slip - but well in front of Vengsarkar, and in front of Pandit who dived across. Healy drove through mid off, made Azharuddin chase again, and took three. Azha's throw broke the stumps, but Healy was well in, and the batsmen considered, but didn't take, an overthrow after the rebound. Kapil now has 33-8-4-80. Tendulkar bowled a short ball, called no ball Healy pulled to deep square, but just a single. He bowled another no ball to Border, but no run from this one which was well up, and maybe slower. 5/289. Border 26, Healy 8, extras 15. Kapil continues to Healy, with the same kind of field he had for Boon, but with Manjrekar pushed back a bit at very short cover. Healy took one, taken from the toe of the bat to one going down leg side, that was all from this over. Tendulkar dropped one short to Healy, who pulled, in the air, towards Kapil at deep mid wicket, who wasn't able to get a hand onto the ball, somehow, and Healy got four. Healy 12. Kapil did have to run to his right, but he was at the ball in time, no idea how he failed to touch it. Raju on after that to replace Kapil, with slip & bat bad to Border. Border attempted a sweep, missed, but got his pad to it, and took 3 leg byes. Vengsarkar had to chase that - he stayed at slip for one ball to Healy, then switched with Azharuddin. Border 26, extras 19, 5/297. Tendulkar bowled another no ball to Border, driven into the covers, but just the extra. Next ball was wide, slow, and low, down leg side, Border ignored that after thinking of sweeping. Tendulkar's last ball of the over was wide down the off side, almost to the return crease, again Border just watched it. 5/298. Raju has three men close for Healy, who cut a short one to the square boundary (short boundary) second ball. That is Australia's 300. Another single followed to mid on, Sidhu had to move slightly to field, the run was easy. Border took another single to end the over, 5/304, Border 27, Healy 17, extras 20. Tendulkar is around the wicket to Border now, Pandit still back, and just Vengsarkar at slip. This was a maiden, not even a no ball, Border just playing most balls out to the off side, and not in any apparent discomfort. Raju continues to Healy, Vengsarkar back at slip, Srikkanth at silly cover (where Vengsarkar had been), no bat pad any more, and Azharuddin back into the ring. Healy took an easy single from the last ball of the over, 5/305. He took another single into the covers from the first ball of Tendulkar's new over, then Border got one fine, just wide of Pandit, down the leg side, and took three. Heally pulled again straight to Kapil, but this time on the bounce, and just a single. 5/310, Border 30, Healy 20. Healy toon another single from Raju, then Border drobe straight, but too straight, as Raju was able to get down to it and take all the pace from the ball, no run. Border let the last ball go, ad watched it turn back towards his off stump. 5/311. 231 ahead now. Tendulkar tried another bouncer to Healy, from around the wicket, Healy attempted a pull, but the ball didn't bounce at all - ended up passing well wide of leg stump. Healy did pull again, but slowly, and into the ground, next ball, just a single, with two men still out on the boundary looking for the catch. Border hot one on the pad, going down leg side, but appeal anyway, not much of one though, then looked for a leg bye (or maybe a run), but was sent back - dove, and was well in before Pandit broke the stumps, big appeal nevertheless (well in, means his bat was about 2/3 of the way back to the bowling crease). Border drove Raju, straight again, this time back through Raju's legs, and took two, then a single to fine leg. 5/316. Border 33. Tendulkar on again, bowls to Border, who just turns it to the leg side, Pandit picks up, throws at the stumps, misses with Border well out, Tendulkar takes the throw, and throws again, with Border going back, but still well out - misses again, as does Pandit, and two overthrows (leg byes). Strange things happening there. Border took another single to backward square. 3/319. Border swept for three from Raju, very fine, Healy ran well to complete the three. Healy then swept, again fine, but just two this time. Healy just dropped the next at his feet, a good ball, then attempted the sweep again, but missed. 5/324. Just barely time for one more over in the session (will be 30 I think), Tendulkar to bowl it, still around the wicket to Border. Border took one to Sidhu on the backward square boundary. Healy cut, but Sidhu is up at point now, and no run, the next he drove to mid on for one. Border took one more to mid wicket, to bring up the 50 partnership (59 minutes), then Healy pulled in the air again, but bouncing short of Kapil Dev at deep forward square leg. 5/328 at lunch, Healy 27, Border 39, extras 22. 74 runs in the session for 3 wickets lost - about even for both teams really. T4, Aus v Ind, D4, 3rd hour Kapil continued after lunch, bowling to Healy, with one slip, gully, and short leg. Healy cut behind point for four, with no third man to save the boundary. He played the next from his pads wide of mid on for another two. Kapil bowled a bouncer last ball, Healy hooked, but along the ground, and just a single. Border 39, Healy 34, extras 22, 5/335. Tendulkar continues from the southern end, around the wicket to Healy who drives the first ball, fairly straight, Raju dove but missed it, leaving Srinath to chase from mid on. Healy ran four. Tandulkar switched back over the wicket with just a couple of balls left - and still with two men out on the on side boundary, no bouncers in that over however. Healy 38, 5/339. Kapil to bowl now to Border, for his first delivery of the session. Kapil has 2 slips and a gully, no short leg for Border. but with men both forward and behind, square leg. Border drove through extra cover for four, a great shot, hit hard. He then took a quick single into the covers. Healy played the one ball he had to face to point. Border 44, 5/344. Tendulkar now to Border, first played defensively - Tendulkar remains over the wicket now, and has just one slip. Border played a few shots, but wasn't able to penetrate the field. Kapil has just a slip and gully now for Healy, who glanced the third(?) ball fine for three. Border pushed to point, took a quick single, Raju threw at the bowlers end, but missed with Border home, Azharuddin prevented overthrows. Kapil gave Healy another bouncer, Healy pulled again (from too close to him), but straight to mid wicket, where Srikkanth completed an easy, though fast catch, and gave Kapil his fifth wicket of the innings (5/96). = Healy C Srikkanth B Kapil Dev 41 6/348 @14:00 Hughes in next, just one ball to face, wide down leg side, Pandit did well to get over to it. Border took one through mid wicket from Tendulkar's first ball of the next over, Tendulkar has two out on the boundary for Hughes, first ball slow, on the stumps, played defensively, then a full toss Hughes pushes into the off side for an easy single to get off the mark. Border plays another good shot, flicked off his pads to the square leg boundary. That's his 50, 3 4's, 134 balls, 186 mins. He then took a leg bye to retain the strike against Kapil. Border 50, Hughes 1, extras 23, 6/355. Border takes another single early in the over, Hughes got a short one first ball, attempted to pull, but didn't really go after it, and missed, taking it on the body. Hughes let the next go outside the off stump, and above waist high. Next took the edge of the bat, into the ground, and stopped at gully. Hughes then took a single from the last ball of the over. 6/357, Hughes 2, Border 51. Tendulkar bowled a poor bouncer, not much bounce, outside leg stump, Hughes tried to pull, not well, missed, the ball went through to Pandit. Hughes just pushes a full toss out to mid wicket, next was slow, pushed out to point. No runs from that over. Kapil continues to Border, still 2 slips and gully. The umpires are handed the ball again during this over, after discussion, it was returned to Kapil yet again, Kapil then took a stump, and used it to bang the ball into the pitch, just one ball left in the over that Border just played into the off side. Another maiden. Raju is back now, to replace Tendulkar. Hughes took one, then Border a slightly quicker one, which was his 5000'th run in tests in Australia (this is his 74th test here). Hughes then took another. 6/360, Border 52, Hughes 4, extras 23. Kapil in for the 151st over of the innings, bowling to Hughes who just defends, then next ball stroked out through the cover field for two. Kapil now has 100... Hughes turned a shortish one down to fine leg for another single. Kapil appealed for LBW against Border from the last ball of the over - pitched on leg, missing off stump. Srinath replaced Raju after just a single over, Hughes defends the first ball, and the second. Srinath has just one slip and a gully. Hughes hooked a short one, well hit, wasn't high enough to bother Hughes who hit it into the ground, and fine of Manjrekar who couldn't prevent the boundary. 6/367. Hughes 11. Raju switched ends, and replaced Kapil from the northern end, bowling into the wind now (what there is of it). Boeder sweeps, down to fine leg, just a single. For Hughes, Rau has a slip and silly mid off. Two out on the on side boundary, forward of square, and square. Hughes picked out the latter - but along the ground all the way, for one. Slip and bat pad for Border, who charged, but just took it on the pad. Border onto the back foot next ball, plays it away, no run. 6/369. Srinath to Hughes who pushes between gully & point for three. Border allows the ball past the off stump. Border played a few more balls then ran one to third man for a single. Hughes then got an edge, between slip and gully, the boundary was saved, just, but Hughes ran four. 6/377. Border takes one behind square from Raju, then Hughes just layed back down the pitch. Thick inside edge to the next, and a single. Border then swept, another single, and the 300 lead. Its hard to see India being able to win from here, won't have enough time to score however many runs are needed, thogh a draw is still a definite possibility. Hughes tried to sweep, got it very fine from an under edge, and took three. That's drinks, Border 56, Hughes 23, extras 23, 6/383. T4, Aus v Ind, D4, tea Australia at 6/383, with Hughes having 23 out of a 35 partnership, looks to be in a good position for a declaration (or to be dismissed) about tea. Hughes is batting well, but not for any longer, Srinath takes his first wicket of the test when he took Hughes on the pads. justin line with off stump, definitely hitting about middle. = Hughes LBW Srinath 23 7/383 @14:47 Warne in next, gets one well up, yorker, that Warne plays well enough. Appeal for catch behind a few balls later, and Warne is out too. That one was down leg side, just under waist high, that Warne just flicked at. = Warne C Pandit B Srinath 0 8/383 @14:51 McDermott in next, but to the non strikers end as Raju resumes to Border, who continues to defend. Outfield in for the last couple of balls to attempt to keep Border at that end, silly LBW appeal from the final ball of the over that Border attempted to sweep, but missed. McDermott flicks the first ball he faces to fine fine leg for four, from another attempted yorker aimed at leg stump. He defended the next few balls, then drove into the covers from a full toss for a single. 8/388. McDermott played back past the bowler, Raju, who was unable to get to it, allowing a single first ball. Azharuddin fielded well at mid on to prevent runs from a drive by Border, who then turned the next ball square for a single to Sidhu. Border 57, McDermott 6, 8/390. Border cut for one first ball of Srinath's next over. Srinath tried a leg side bouncer to McDermott, but it didn't get up, and McDermott ignored it. Next was outside off stump, kept low, 2nd bounce to Pandit. McDermott drove the next, nicely, but directly to Tendulkar at mid off. Yorker length to McDermott next, good ball, played well enough. Another short one, McDermott played with his thigh pad. 8/391. Border 58. Border came well down the pitch to Raju, then just defends back to the bowler. Third ball, down the pitchh again, drive to Sidhu who is deep at mid off, single to Border. McDermott drove to mid off, Manjrekar on that side, also deep, and another single from the last ball of the over, 8/393. The biggest winning 4th innings total (this century anyway) is 315. Another drive by McDermott, two runs from Srinath. Then another attempt, but from the outside edge in the air - no fieldsman near it, and two more to McDermott as Sidhu comes from 3rd man to backward point. Next ball is very wide, and keeping low, too wide to tempt McDermott. McDermott drove, hard, through extra cover, tendulkar chased, but couldn't catch it, and four more to McDermott, and 400 up. He tried again, missed, just past the outside edge. McDermott knows that wasn't a sensible thing to do. Next he defended, no run. 8/401. Border 59, McDermott 15, extras 23. Raju in again to Border, pushed to mid wicket, no run. Next was driven back to Raju, from a step and a half down the pitch, out to mid wicket again from the third ball, then an attempted sweep, missed, taken on pad, putched outside leg, turning past leg, no appeal. Border took a single next ball, then McDermott just defends the final ball. 8/402. Srinath around the wicket to Border again now, first ball wide outside off stump, allowed through. Another wide one, Border attempted a cut, but te ball kept very low, Border well over it. Border drove a half volley into the covers, no run. He attempted a drive from one well up from the final ball of the over, but hit only the pitch. Kapil back on now to McDermott, replacing Raju. McDermott defended well, no runs from this one, only the final ball, a yorker outside leg gave McDermott any kind of trouble, but he dug it out OK. Raju has switched ends again, replacing Srinath - he appears to be just filling in from whichever end the pace bowler doesn't want to bowl. Border continues to defend. Border attempts to sweep one down leg side, Pandit got the bails off, but the ball was too wide, and Border was back in time. Another maiden, 8/402 still, Border 60, McDermott 15, extras 23. McDermott drives Kapil, slightly in the air, to Sidhu at mid on, no run there, the next is let go outside off, only one run since McDermott's big swings several overs ago. At the minute Aust seems to be batting to save the match, which doesn't really seem necessary. McDermott managed four behind square, Raju just failed to stop it with his foot, then collided with the fence. McDermott is back on the slog now, hit high over Tendulkar at mid off, he runs back, but can't quite get under it, and McDermott takes two. McDermott 21, 8/408. Border took a single first ball of Raju's next over - stepped back, then pushed it from right in front of middle stump to extra cover. McDermott defence, one from the edge into the ground, then to Vengsarkar. McDermott stepped back, gave himself room to cut, but the ball stayed low, maybe top spinner, and took middle stump. = McDermott B Raju 21 9/409 @15:32 Tea will be delayed for up to 30 minutes again, assuming Whitney can hang around the next 7 minutes till the scheduelled interval - in any case, tea when all out is most likely, whenever that happens. Kapil in to bowl to Border, pushed out to mid on for none. Border could have taken a single next ball, but decided to keep the strike, he defends again next ball, then pushed the next to backward point, and took the single this time. Kapil to Whitney, taken on the pad, LBW appeal, but Whitney forward, and possibly outside off, Whitney claims he got an edge, another LBW appeal next ball, this one going down leg side. 9/410 Border 62, Whitney 0. Border turns Raju outto square leg, to Manjrekar, no run. Next ball, down the pitch, then defends. Border pulls to deep mid wicket, just a single, Tendulkar is there waiting. Whitney defends, looks as safe as Whitney ever looks there, and again next ball. Next ball faster, but Whitney gets the bat onto it somehow. 9/411, Border 63. Border drives to deep mid wicket again, Srikkanth mis-fields, almost allows two - they would have mad eit if they hadn't waited, but just one. Appeal for both bat pad catch, and LBW next ball, ball missing bat and leg stump. Whitney drove the next, but just to mid off. He defended the next, quite safely, back to Kapil, then another defensive shot to cover. One more appeal last ball - going way down leg side. 9/412, Border 64. Raju to Border again, well into the scheduelled tea interval, Border down the pitch and hits over wide mid on, four. Safe. He cuts the next, to deep point, just a single. Slip, forward short leg, and silly point for Whitney, who just defends, and survives the over. 9/417, Border 69. Kapil again to Border, just one slip now, Border drives, nicely, wide of mid off, takes two as Sidhu chases, stops with his foot, then returns. Next ball he defends, then drives again, but straight to Sidhu, and just a single. Whitney defends, then Manjrekar comes in to silly point, still just one slip. Bouncer next ball, Whitney just sways away from it. Well played. Whitney drives the next through mid wicket for two, and gets off the mark. 9/422, Border 72, Whitney 2. Raju again to Border, on his highest test score since the corresponding match last year. Border continues to defend mostly - takes two from a full toss he flicked fine on the on side. He drives the next to extra cover, no run, down the pitchnext ball, turned to backward square, no run, then cuts the last ball to point, but no run. 9/424. Border 74. Kapil in to Whitney, who turns him behind square, and takes a single first ball. Border then takes a single to long on, Whitney continues to defend, then attempts to drive, but misses - a little impatient there perhaps. Edge onto bad, then dropped well in front of Srikkanth. Whitney playes the last ball to mid on, no run. 9/426, Border 75, Whitney 3. Srinath back to replace Raju, around the wicket to Border, first ball aimed down leg side, from the pad, Pandit does well to take it. Border cuts the next, but Kapil Dev is there waiting behind point, so no run. Next ball wide outside off stump, more bounce than many recently, but Border just allowed it through. Border takes a single into the deep set cover field, then Whitney faces Srinath from over the wicket, and defends safely. Srinath has slip, gully, and short leg. Last ball of the over, wide, low, and not very fast outside off stump, just ignored by Whitney. 9/427. Kapil remains on, bowls a bouncer to Border, who is surprised at that, but ducks safely enough. He could have taken a single to mid on, but decides not to bother. Border defends solidly against the next ball, then takes a single to mid off. Kapil to Whitney has slip, gully, short leg, and silly point again, first ball defended, next takes Whitney on the pad, appeal, going well down leg side, not out. Now beginning to look as if Whitney might last till tea, just 5 minutes left - just like the Indian first innings this. Srinath in again to Border, around the wicket, Chapelli thinks Tendulkar should be on. Border taken on the pad, half appeal. Border defends to mid on next ball, border taken on the pad again, well outside off stump, Srinath appeals, but doesn't even bother to look at the umpire. Just a couple of balls left, no-one is hurrying, this will be the last over before tea probably. Border attempted a cut, missed. Border walks away, waits for the clock, then just plays to mid on, no run. At tea, Australia 9/428, Border 77, Whitney 3, extras 23. T4, Aus v Ind, D4, end of Aust inning Kapil in to Whitney after the tea break, Whitney just defending, ducks under a bouncer, then LBW appeal, down leg side, not out. Still 9/428 after the maiden over to Whitney. Srinath still around the wicket to Border, LBW appeal first ball, way down leg side, Border cuts a wide one, straight into the ground, hard, bounces slowly to Sidhu, no run. Next to Azharuddin in the covers, and again no run. Border looked as if he wanted to pull a short one then, but decided to just let it go over off. Border then chopped the ball down, just misses hos stumps, maybe could have taken a single, it was the last ball of the over, but didn't as Pandit ran around t field. Still no score since tea. Kapl again to Whitney, who drives, but bottom edge only, back along the pitch to Kapil, then he pushes the next into the covers, and they take an easy single. Attendances: 13170 ysterday, 7348 today, 51615 total so far. A single to Border next ball, then another short ball to Whitney, which Whitney ducked under. Whitney then pulled away as Kapil started in from a short run - then another short ball, Whitney under it again, probably neither was actually high enough to count as a bouncer. Whitney stays up for the next shortish one, and just defends it. 9/430, Border 78, Whitney 4, extras 23. Border again facing Srinath, playes the first into the covers, no run. He then cut the next to backward point, just one. Whitney played at one from Srinath, just past the outside edge, then he drove the next into the covers, but no run. The next he hit in the air, to long off, straighter than the mid off fielder, and ran 4. Eight is his highest test score (beating his 7 in Brisbane). 9/435 after Whitney swayed away from one almost chest high. Border 79. Just another 3 overs now till the new ball is due (or maybe its four), Kapil bowls to Border, just one slip, and the rest of the field spread. Border continues to defend, not playing almost any attacking strokes. But that changed - just tried a pull from outside off, but didn't get onto it, and no run. He did take two behind square next ball. 9/437 after the over, Border 81, maybe he will get to a hundred? Can Whitney last that long? he has more test runs now than wickets! Raju into the attack again, Whitney comes down to him, drives in the air over mid on, and takes 3 - now has 29 (that's total runs, all tests, 18 against India, 11 this innings). Border took a single next ball, out to deep mid wicket. Whitney then defends, and lasts the rest of the over. 9/441, Whitney 11, Border 82, extras 23. Kapil in again, new ball due after this over, LBW appeal against Border, pitched outside leg, may have taken the pad outside leg, ball would have hit leg - not out. Border then pulls, over the mid wicket boundary, the second six of the match, through the Victor Richardson gates, and out of the ground. Another one to Border, then Whitney on strike again, defending, then played to backward square, for another one. Border pulls again, doesn't get this one as well, just a single to Manjrekar on the mid wicket boundary, but that keeps the strike for Border: 90, Whitney: 12, 9/450. Raju continues (old ball obviously), Border steps away, cuts from about leg stump, no run - next ball played to mid off, easy single taken, Whitney down the pitch to Raju, plays it back to the bowler, and hurries back. Next he played to Azharuddin at mid on, sets off, and is sent back, Azha's throw to Pandit, breaks the wicket, with Whitney just out, but rushing back, given not out, good decision. Whitney then tried a big hit, not a good idea really, hit it right down Srinath's throat at mid on. Next report at stumps. T4, Aus v Ind, D4, Stumps Needing 372 in about 7 hours to win, India opened with Srikkanth and Sidhu, Srikkanth taking strike against McDermott. Srikkanth opened the scoring with an edge wide of third slip (Border) in the air, to the boundary for four- Border moved a little wider. Another wide one, Srikkanth attempts a cut again, ball didn't get up, but Srikkanth still manages to be under it (bat almost horizontal on the pitch). No other run, India 0/4, Srikkanth 4, Sidhu yet to face. Whitney on from the other end - first ball, Sidhu gets the edge, directly to Taylor at first slip, and dropped again, and Taylor isn't happy. Next one Sidhu just lets go past. Next one is wide, Sidhu ignores it. Then he defends against the next, and then takes two to fine leg to open his scoring. A leg bye to fine leg completed the over. 0/7, Sidhu 2. McDermott to Sidhu, 4 slips and gully now, plus Boon at bat pad. Sidhu took a quick single from the first ball. Full toss from McDermott to Srikkanth, just played to mid off. Next ball short, played down into the gully, safely. LBW appeal next ball, going down leg side, leg bye. No ball from McDermott to Sidhu - played at and beaten. Sidhu drives the next into the covers, no run there, then a single to square leg. India 0/11, Srikkanth 4, Sidhu 4, extras 3. Whitney to Sidhu, from the pad, flies to Boon at short leg, appeal for the catch, but no bat there. Not LBW either. Defends the next, then down leg side, not far from leg stump, Sidhu attempts to drive, but under (inside) edge - just back to Whitney. Next driven through the covers for four, from the back foot. Last ball of the over, chopped into the ground while attempting a cut. 0/15, Sidhu 8. McDermott to Srikkanth, who defends, and again, both back to McDermott. TV gone for the day now, the rest is from radio commentary. A no ball, short Srikkanth moves inside it, then a good one outside off stump, Srikkanth just pulls the bat away in time. Single to fine leg where Whitney fields. Sidhu runs the ball along the grond to gully, 0/17, Sidhu 8, Srikkanth 5, extras 4. Whitney to Srikkanth who continues to defend, taken on the inside of the back leg one ball, pitched outside leg, nothing from this over. McDermott to Sidhu again, the second maiden in a row. Srikkanth takes four down very fine to fine leg from Whitney's next over. Another one followed later in the over in the same direction, but straight to McDermott, just a single. McDermott back Srikkanth edged, just short of Waugh at second slip, Taylor chased down towards the boundary, and Srikkanth took two - apparently three were available. A no ball added another to the score. 0/25, Sidhu 8, Srikkanth 12, extras 5. Hughes is on now, to replace Whitney, Sidhu beaten past the outside edge. Appeal for LBW next ball, according to Rod Marsh on the radio, it may have hit outside the line, may have been too high, may have gone past leg - too many mays... Single to fine leg from the last ball of the over, Sidhu now 9, 0/26. McDermott bowls again to Sidhu, probably this over and one more tonight. Sidhu takes one through square leg as Boon runs back from short leg to field. Another single to Srikkanth, turned to backward square, Whitney around from fine leg to field. Sidhu defends, then ducks under a bouncer. Hughes beats Srikkanth with a good ball, just moved away a little, next ball outside off stump, and let go. Srikkanth fends the next one away form the body - rubs his forearm. Next played to short leg. Hughes from the short run to Srikkanth, a bit wide. 0/28, Sidhu 10, Srikkanth 13, extras 5. McDermott bowls what will be the last over of the day, Sidhu defends. He continues to defend through the over, last ball, from the bat, through the slips, and three runs taken. Aparently fell just short of Mark Waugh, ho got his hand to it, lifted it into the air, and so stopped it being able to get to the boundary. (Rod Marsh's eyes). 0/31, Sidhu 13, Srikkanth 13, extras 5. India need another 341 to win in a complete day, rumoured to be going to be hot. Will be an interesting day tomorrow, could still go either way, but about 250 looks to be the max that can be scored in a day. Still, India had better attempt to get the runs, to force Border to defend, or they're very likely to lose - and if they try, they may do it. T4, Aus v Ind, D5, 1st hour With India on 31, they need 372 to win - 341 today, and all wickets still in hand, Srikkanth on 13, Sidhu also 13, and extras 5. At least 75 overs must be bowled by 17:00, then another 15 after that. The scoring rate required is greater than anything that's been done before in this match. Hughes bowled the first over of the day to Sidhu, who took three, and then Srikkanth who took another three, to take both to 16 after the first over. Whitney opened at the other end, Srikkanth took a single, then Sidhu drove nicely through extra cover for four. He finished the over wth a swing at one wide off off stump. 0/42, Srikkanth 17, Sidhu 20. Border isn't on the field at the minute, Reiffel is on as sub. Border has some stomache problem, and will be back soon. McDermott replaced Hughes after just one over (allowing McDermott to change ends this morning), and bowled a maiden to Srikkanth. Whitney appealed against Srikkanth first ball of the next over, pitched outside leg, couldn't be LBW, didn't go near the bat, couldn't be a bat pad catch. Srikkanth then cut, in the air, just wide of Reiffel at point, who threw himself, but couldn't get to it, the ball continued to the boundary. He took a single next ball. Sidhu drove nicely through the covers for another four from a no ball next ball. That's 50 for India. McDermott beat Srikkanth first ball of the next over, then got one to take him on the pad, and which flew to Waugh at 2nd slip - big appeal for caught at slip, given not out - didn't look like the ball touched the bat (certainly not lbw). Next ball, Srikkanth raised his bat to the air, let the ball go, right onto the top of his off stump. = Srikkanth B McDermott 22 1/52 @11:18 Border back now. Manjrekar in next, 2 slips, 2 gullies, short leg, silly mid off for McDermott. Second ball be played from a thick edge, wide of gully, for Manjrekar's opening run. McDermott appealed again, for LBW against Sidhu next ball, but going down leg side. Whitney continues to Manjrekar who turned one behind square for two. He took another quick single from the final ball of the over. 1/56. McDermott took the edge of Manjrekar's bat next ball, directly to Taylor at first slip, slightly to his right - dropped again, then allows a single to Manjrekar. Almost a run out a couple of balls later as the batsmen started on a suicidal single, but went back. Sidhu took two to point. Sidhu 27, Manjrekar 5, extras 5, 1/59. Whitney bowled a maiden to Manjrekar, then Sidhu took three from McDermott after an outside edge wide of slips. Manjrekar took a single next ball, and Sidhu followed the ball after. 1/64. Sidhu 31, Manjrekar 6. Sidhu cut a wide one from Whitney for four behind point, then Whitney got one onto his pad, outside leg, which just deflected wide enough to beat Healy and add four leg byes. 1/72, Sihu 35, extras 9. Exactly 300 needed to win now. McDermott bowled another maiden to Manjrekar, then Hughes replaced Whitney. Hughes is getting a bit more bounce - Sidhu looked to attempt a cut, but well under the ball, which was wide enough to cut. Then, next ball, further up, on line, takes Sidhu on the pad, and definitely LBW. = Sidhu LBW Hughes 35 2/72 @11:49 Tendulkar out at number four, which is probably the right thing to do, as he's been the one batsman (aside from Kapil and the tail) in any kind of form for India. Hughes now has 100 test wickets in Australia. First ball gets up, moves away, but Tendulakr keeps the bat well away. McDermott got one to take the top edge (shoulder) of Manjrekar's bat - flew over Border at fine gully, out of his reach, and two runs to Manjrekar. Then he had Manjrekar duck into a short one that didn't get up - flew from the arm into the slips, 2/74, Manjrekar 8, Tendulkar 0. Tendulkar opened his scoring with a nice cover drive for four from Hughes next over, then got a leg bye from one that took the thigh pad, then Healy got to but couldn't hold. 2/79, Manjrekar 8, Tendulkar 4, extras 10. on fielded one nicely at bat pat from Tendulkar - looks like he's going to try and get a run out for revenge... Tendulkar took two next ball. 2/81 at drinks, Manjrekar 8, Tendulkar 6, extras 10. To win India need to keep the scoring rate up all day, and not lose wickets - the 50 runs in the first hour is fast enough, but 2 wickets is too many. For Aust to win they can either take wickets all day, or allow the scoring to proceed at a reasoable, but not too great, rate, so India see a chance in the final session but have to slog to make it, perhaps losing wickets doing that - either of those is still possible. T4, Aus v Ind, D5, lunch At 2/81, India still need 291 to win, with 8 wickets left. Tendulkar is 6, and Manjrekar 8, with 10 extras. 15 overs were bowled in the first hour. Manjrekar took a single from Hughes, then Tendulkar drove to long on, not very quickly, for three. Manjrekar then edged to Border in slips, but bouncing well in front. Next ball same shot, but to Waugh this tie, still bouncing well in front - Manjrekar almost playing it deliberately. Manjrekar 9, Tendulkar 9, extras 10. 2/85. Waugh came on to replace McDermott - got one to Tendulkar down leg side, and was turned to fine leg for a single. Manjrekar took nothing from the remaining balls, which didn't look very dangerous. Hughes got a short one to Tendulkar, coming in to Tendulkar who swayed away from it, keeping the bat away as the ball passed about chest high. Still 2/86 after this over, a good one, but played well by Tendulkar. Manjrekar cut in the air, over slips, from Waugh, and to the deep 3rd man boundary for four. Waugh ended his over with a bouncer, Manjrekar had no problem going well under that one. 2/90, Manjrekar 13, Tendulkar 10. >From Hughes, Tendulkar edged one right to third slip - unfortunately there are only 2 slips there, so four more runs. He then took another three to the same area, but this one a deliberate shot along the ground. 2/97, Tendulkar 17. Waugh to Tendulkar, takes him on the pads, LBW appeal, and out again - attempting to play across the line. Tendulkar might have been a bit unlucky both innings - again it was close. = Tendulkar LBW Waugh 17 3/97 @12:26 Vengsarkar came out, and first ball cut for four, to bring up the 100 for India - 3/101 after the over. Manjrekar 13, Vengsarkar 4. Manjrekar took a single to Warne first ball from Hughes, single might not have been there to another fielder. Vengsarkar came very close to getting an edge to one a few balls later, but somehow missed. He then failed to play a shot at one which took him on the pads, and was certainly going onto the stumps (certainly hit outside the line, but I don't think he really was playing at it, he was keeping the bat away - pushed where the ball had been well after it left the pad). = Vengsarkar LBW Hughes 4 4/102 @12:33 Azharuddin in next, but that was the end of the over, and Waugh continues to Manjrekar - who cut one to gully, for none, then managed to push one through slips for a three. First ball, Azharuddin almost chopped the ball onto the stumps - his pads were in the way fortunately for him. Waugh has a short backward square as well as the bad pad, forward of square. Waugh ended with a good ball that Azha dug out. Hughes bowled an over of varying quality to Manjrekar, who eventually drove to long on, where Warne overhauled the ball just as it was stopping, and Manjrekar ran an easy four - possibly could have had five had they run a bit harder, Manjrekar wasn't interested. 4/109, Manjrekar 21. Waugh continues to Azharuddin, still on 0. He took a single to mid wicket to get off the mark. Healy appealed for a leg side catch next ball, not out - probably he hit the ground. Next ball down leg side again, not bouncing, and too wide to play - no ball called anyway. Manjrekar attempted a cut to a wide one outside off, well under it, not a safe shot. 4/111 after they wisely decided not to take a single from the final ball, as Waugh was across to pick up quickly. Azharuddin managed to get a little bat on one down leg side, went very fine, and to the boundary. Hughes has Azharuddin jumping to play the next couple of balls, rising to less than waist high, then he bowled a leg spinner, but Azha played that OK. 4/115, Azharuddin 5, Manjrekar 21, extras 11. Waugh to Manjrekar again, second ball a bouncer, down leg side, Manjrekar just ducks under it. The over ends a maiden, with an LBW appeal that's rejected, going down leg side. Warne on then to rplace Hughes, just 10 minuts before lunch. First ball a full toss, and easy single to Azharuddin. Next picthed on leg stump, spun a lot, and took the oitside edge. Manjrekar then hit one down the field in the air, quite safe (straighter ball), Hughes and Whitnet both chased, both went to pick up at the same time, Whitney reached it first, and threw back, but still 3 runs. Azharuddin can't get any of the rest of the over away. 4/119, Manjrekar 24, Azharuddin 6. Manjrekar took two square on the off side, from Waugh, not really a good shot, then drove a full toss down to long on, and ran four as McDermott chased and returned. Next ball kept very low, just past Manjrekar's ankles, and through to Healy, then a no ball added another one to the score. Manjrekar hit one in the air past Boon at short leg, but too wide for a possible catch - no run however. 4/123. Manjrekar 30. Warne continues to Azharuddin, who stepped back, and cut, but just to the field. Next ball Azharuddin plays with bat behind pad, then again defends in a similar fashion. He took a single, played very slowly behind square, then Manjrekar didn't play at one coming in from the leg side, just pushed away with the pad. 4/124 Azharuddin 7. Whitney on again replacing Waugh, bowling around the wicket to Azharuddin. He's bowling from very wide - Greg Chapell thinks he has a better chance of an LBW, but he has almost none at all from there, he's obviously trying to get Azharuddin caught down the leg side. Azha drove straight again, to long on, four more all run as McDermott has to chase again, fielding this time just barely inside the fence. That's lunch, India 4/131, Manjrekar 30, Azharuddin 7, extras 12. It would take a remarkable innings from one of these two, or perhaps from Kapil Dev for India to win from here, even to draw the rest of th batsmen are going to have to play very well, on a pitch that is sometimes keeping very low, but is occasionally still giving plenty of bounce. Just one ball from Warne really spun then, but he had just a couple of overs, so anything is possible - Border may even bowl later. T4, Aus v Ind, D5, 3rd hour At 4/131 India resumed needing to bat well to save the match, let alone win it. Manjrekar took 8 from Warne's first over of the session, the first four from a full toss. McDermott came on to bowl to Azharuddin, and started with two good balls. Azharuddin eventually pushed one to point for a single. 4/140 after the over, Manjrekar 37, Azharuddin 13, extras 12. During the lunch Interval I saw Tendulkar's LBW again, and now I think it was a good decision, he was a bit firther across than I first thought, and I very much doubt now the ball could have missed leg stump, which I first thought it might have. Warne overpitched on leg stump, Azharuddin drove nicely through mid on to the boundary for four, well placed, well struck. The next was a better ball, defended with front foot well down the pitch (back foot still in). Manjrekar looks to be playing a bit better after lunch than he had before - controlled a short one from McDermott quite well, then drove to long on, and ran four as Warne chased. 4/148 Azharuddin played a nice cut from one that spun away from him, and he moved away from, to the boundary for four, 150 up now. The 50 partnership is also up. The scoring rate is about at the required level, which is probably what both teams want. 4/152, Manjrekar 41, Azharuddin 21. Manjrekar drove an overpitched ball from McDermott to long on, and they ran three. McDermott got one to rear, probably from a crack or something, took Azharuddin on the glove, and flew towards short leg, though dropping well short of Boon who was back a bit, looking more for the shot directly from the bat. Next ball he drove nicely for four to one coming in towards the stumps, then was beaten by a slower one that turned in, played well outside it, the ball passed outside off stump, then McDermott gave him a bouncer, and finally ha managed to get one fine to the boundary. 4/163. Manjrekar took a single from Warne, then Azharuddin attempted to attack, but couldn't get it away, the last flying from pad into the off side. McDermott bowled a reasonable but not threatening maiden to Manjrekar who played it well enough. 4/164. Warne bowled a big full toss to Azharuddin to hit it to the mid wicket boundary - one bounce and over. He then bowled a short one, outside leg, turning back, Azha hit it hard, but straight to Boon - then one further off, clipped from his pads but just to Boon (Square leg) again, who didn't field cleanly, but no runs, the last ball Azha forced to point, and still no run. 4/168 Azharuddin 33. Manjrekar 45. McDermott has 2 slips, and gully, plus short leg, to Manjrekar, plus one at somewhere between 4th and 5th slip, or perhaps a very fine gully. Another reasonable over, no score. Azharuddin got one short, spinning away, and cut it for four, a good shot. Next one a wrong'un, but pitched a bit too far to leg. Azha drove on the up, to Waugh at short cover, who was down on his knees to try and catch it, but missed, should have been a simple catch. Hughes in to replace McDermott, starts with one well up to Manjrekar. Hughes has the same field as McDermott had. Next one from Hughes ran along the ground, outside off stump, let go by Manjrekar. Hughes then deliverd a full toss, above knee high, pushed to Marsh who is in at a short mid on now. Next ball, Manjrekar drove, on te bounce, just past Marsh. Warne dove to save it, but didn't hang onto it - but pushed it back towards the stumps. Manjrekar decided to take one from the mis-field - Azharuddin decided that was lunacy (correctly), and stayed in his crease. Warne threw back to Healy, who removed the bails with both batsmen at the bowlers end (both in the crease). Stupid run by Manjrekar. = Manjrekar Run Out 45 5/172 @14:25 Hughes in to Kapil Dev, aimed at leg side, kept low, Kapil let it go past leg stump. Warne in again to Azharuddin - one on leg stump, turned fiercely, past off stump, past Healy, and three byes were run. Marsh is in at a very short cover now for Kapil Dev. 5/175, Azharuddin 37, extras 15, Kapil Dev 0. Hughes to Azharuddin, 2 slips, gully, short leg, short mid wicket, and mid on closer than usual. Azha took one down to fine leg. Kapil takes his first run to mid wicket, with a more orthodox field in place. Hughes put in a short one to Azha, down leg side, Azha played a Gower type flick, but didn't get any bat to it. 5/177, Kapil Dev 1, Azharuddin 38. Warne in now to Kapil Dev, one there turned a bit, Kapil just kept his bat away. Warne still has a slip and a short point. Kapil cut one, just wide of slip, down towards the boundary, and four run. Kapil 5, 5/181. Azharuddin took one to deep backward square from the first ball of Hughes' next over. Appeal for LBW from the next ball against Kapil, going down the leg side. Hughes got one to take the edge, Kapil hit it down, deliberately, into the ground, fielded by Border at the finer of the gully. Same thing repeated, but not hit as fine, or down as quickly, and well caught low by Marsh. = Kapil Dev C Marsh B Hughes 5 6/182 @14:41 Drinks at the change of batsmen. No chance for India to win now, only a small chance they can save it. T4, Aus v Ind, D5, tea Prabhakar comes in with six down for 182 at the drinks interval, to join Azharuddin who has strike as Warne begins a new over. One turned there, from about middle, but played well enough out to square leg. Single to deep mid wicket next ball. Big LBW appeal first ball against Parbhakar, probably pitched just outside leg, may have hit, but Prabhakar was well forward. Not Out. 6/183 as the over ends, a better over from Warne. Azharuddin 40, Prabhakar 0, extras 15. Hughes continues to Azharuddin, well driven four from a wide one well up, played through cover. Then a nice drive to forward of square leg for another four, two good shots in this over. Make that three, the last one was repeated, 50 for Azharuddin. Eleven fours and 8 singles in 52. Last ball of the over, Azha went to duck under a bouncer but it didn't get up at all, he had to adjust late, and just thrust the bat at it, pushed safely into the slip area. Prabhakar took a single to square leg first ball or Warne's next over. Another four from a full pitch from Warne, just beats Jones to the cover boundary - 200 up now for India. Azha has more runs in this innings than he made in all the previous innings of the series. Azharuddin 56, Prabhakar 1, extras 15, 6/200. Hughes in again to Prabhakar who takes two wide of mid on, as Warne has to chase from about the third ball. Next ball from the pad to backward square - outside leg, no run taken as no shot offered. Prabhakar drove through extra cover for four from a half volley, beautiful shot. Next ball was a slow one, well played - defended. 6/206, Prabhakar 7. Azharuddin took his first two, pushed from wide of leg behind Boon at square leg. He then took a quick single, pushed to Whitney at mid on, who makes it very safe by failing to pick up. It was safe enough anyway. Prabhakar took another two, again down behind square leg. A slow full toss, just pushed back down the pitch ends the over. 6/211, Azharuddin 59, Prabhakar 9. Whitney on next to replace Hughes, around the wicket again to Azharuddin again, clearly a plan there. Two short on the on side, plus 2 slips and gully. One from the edge there to slip, but along the ground. Azha drives to the short mid on (third on the on side, bit not so short), slightly in the air, but safe. Just a quick single pushed into the off side to end the over. Azharuddin 60, 6/212. Azharuddin played w
