Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 21:21 Larkins steals Botham's thunder DURHAM, England, July 17 Former England captain Ian Botham was knocked out of the lime- light here on Saturday by his old friend Wayne Larkins. Botham, famous for incredible batting performances against Australia, hoped to give Australia a beating one last time in front of more than 5,000 spectators. But the 37-year-old all-rounder's contribution of 32 at the Race- course Ground was a small run haul compared to Larkins' impres- sive 151. Botham, playing his final match against Australia -- barring a miracle England recall -- had to wait until just before tea to get under the spotlight. It turned out to be an all-too- brief visit -- 37 deliveries faced, six boundaries struck and then a sliced drive to point off medium pacer Steve Waugh. Both- am has two more days to sign off in style against the old enemy with bat or ball. But Larkins was enjoying the sweet taste of revenge after caught at slip, 27 fours and two sixes -- 120 runs in boundaries alone -- had come off his bat. Not even that wicket, nor the one of Phil Bainbridge (3) soon after, could do much for Holdsworth's figures. Any hope he had of playing in Thursday's fourth Test looked dead and buried by the time Durham finished their day's work on 385 for eight declared. Holdsworth's share was two for 118 from 18 sadly wayward overs. Brendon Julian and Paul Reiffel, both of whom are likely to play at Headingley, northern England, performed a little better. But Australia must be praying that Merv Hughes -- still resting his groin strain -- suffers no setback before Thursday's Test. Thanks to vasa Contributed by The Management (help@*nodak.edu)
