Pakistan were still 204 runs behind after Western Province, with captain Eric Simons notching his maiden first-class century, ear- lier finished with 436 for nine in the first innings. The 32-year-old Simons started the day at 40 not out but reached treble figures at lunch, at which point he retired with a badly bruised left leg and the innings was closed. The runs carried Pakistan to 308 all out in their first innings. Manzoor Elahi had set the tone for a disappointing day for the touring team after they had resumed at 232 for five when he ran himself out. Western Province, with a 128-run first innings lead, reached 196 for four at the close of the third day of the four-day match. He took six for 51 as the touring team, chasing 399, were bundled out for 206. Only Asif Mujtaba with 65 -- his second second half century of the match -- and Inzamam-ul-Haq, who made 57, offered serious resistance during a fourth-wicket partnership of 85.
