Date-stamped : 28 Feb95 - 06:57 South Africa v New Zealand Academy XI Trafalgar Park, Nelson, 27 February - 1 March 1995 ====> Day 1, 27 Feb 95 South Africa took a first innings lead over the New Zealand Academy XI on Monday on a day for bowlers when 17 wickets tumbled and seven batsmen made it into double figures. Chasing the home side`s total of 120 all out, the tourists had reached 153 for seven by the close of the first day, but only after a nightmare start. South Africa lost Andrew Hudson to the first ball of the innings when Kerry Walmsley pinned back his off stump and captain Hansie Cronje went leg before wicket to Glen Jonas shortly after. Then South Africa had a lucky escape when Rudi Steyn was dropped at first slip off Walmsley, but Darryll Cullinan steadied the in- nings with an innings of 51, including a six over long-on off spinner Paul Wiseman, and Allan Donald and Steven Jack claimed four wickets each in the Academy`s innings. Only Michael Parlane and Nathan Astle offered real resistance, with innings of 35 and 49. South Africa face New Zealand in a one-off centenary test match in Auckland on Saturday. When bad light stopped play 10 minutes early on the second day, South Africa were 13 for one in their second innings and needed a further 69 runs to win the match. The tourists lost Rudi Steyn caught at first slip by John Aiken off fast-medium Kerry Walmsley without scoring but South Africa should easily win the low scoring match. South Africa took a 45-run first innings lead earlier in the day after being dismissed for 165, Walmsley rounding off the innings by taking the last three wickets in quick time to finish with five for 73. The Academy XI batsmen struggled for the second time in the match against the fast-medium trio of Allan Donald, Steven Jack and Craig Matthews to be all out for 126, 40 minutes after tea. Only stubborn resistance from middle order batsman Richard Jones, who grafted 30 in 127 minutes held up the South African march. Matthews finished with four for 23 from 16 overs, Jack took three for 28 and Donald two for 52. Donald also picked up a warning for intimidatory bowling, when he bounced a succession of short- pitched deliveries at the Academy XI tailenders. Contributed by vasa (Vasanthan.Dasan@Central.Sun.COM)
