Date-stamped : 28 Jun96 - 02:15 England NCA (National Cricket Association) XI v Pakistanis Trowbridge 27 June 1996 ====> REPORT One-day Tour Match: Pakistan show no mercy By Ralph Dellor at Trowbridge THE Pakistanis opened their tour with an eight-wicket victory over the club cricketers comprising the England NCA XI, accom- plished by what is likely to be close to their Test side. The NCA`s decision to bat first was a courageous one. It was seen as the only chance of springing a surprise on a sunny day. That hope disappeared when Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis opened the attack by running in with a purpose. However, it was the off-spin of Saqlain Mushtaq who claimed the first wicket, and when the promising Shahid Nazir made it 31 for two in the 14th over, the outcome was inevitable. Only a fifth-wicket partnership between David Clarke and Stewart Laudat worth 68 in 13 overs brought a respectable total of 182. Clarke in particular can be pleased with his innings, ending undefeated on 65. Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar set about the NCA attack once the opening bowlers had been seen off. Sohail cruised to his hun- dred off only 77 balls. Saeed was bowled by Laudat and, when victory was in sight, Sohail was comically run out. Ijaz Ahmed knocked off the required runs and then the tourists held a practice to prepare for sterner tests.
