Pakistan's Test victories over India during past decades
Mohammad Shoaib Ahmed
Pakistan overcame serious apprehension, crowd violence and biased umpiring to win two out of three Tests played on Indian grounds this year to maintain its creditable record against its traditional rival.
Hereunder is a record of Pakistan's victories during the past decades:
INDIA V PAKISTAN 1952-53
Second Test Match
Played at University Ground, Lucknow, on 23, 24, 25, 26 October.
Toss: India.
Result: Pakistan won by an innings and 43 runs.
Debuts: Pakistan - Mahmood Hussain, Zulfiqar Ahmed; India - H.G. Gaekwad, S. Nyalchand.
Umpires: B.J. Mohoni and J.R. Patel.
India 106 (Fazal Mahmood 5-52) and 182 (L. Amarnath* 61, Fazal Mahmood 42-7). Pakistan 331 (Nazar Mohammad 124).
The first ever Test played at Lucknow (on Jute matting) brought Pakistan's first victory in only their second Test match. Pakistan gained immediate revenge in the second Test, played on matting at Lucknow. Fazal Mahmood, Master of the mat 'did a Mankad'. His 7 for 42 in the second innings and match aggregate of 12 for 94 remain to this day Pakistani series record against India. In reply to India's 106 (still a record for the lowest score in an Indo-Pak Test), Fazal taking 5 for 52, opener Pankaj Roy top scoring with 30, Pakistan piled up 331, opener Nazar Mohammad having a triple personal triumph he carried his bat for 124 not out, thus scoring Pakistan's first-ever century in Test annals, and remained on the field of play throughout the match. In the second innings, India were 'Fazal led again for 182, Skipper Lala Amarnath top scoring with a masterly 61 not out - to no avail. India lost by an innings and 43 runs. India's total of 106 is their lowest total against Pakistan and match aggregate of 619-30 is the lowest for a complete match between Pakistan and India.
PAKISTAN V INDIA 1978-79
Second Test Match played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on 27, 28, 29, 31 October, 1 November.
Toss: Pakistan.
Result: Pakistan won by eight wickets.
Debuts: Nil
Umpires: Shujauddin and Mahboob Shah.
India 199 (D.B. Vengsarkar 76, Imran Khan 4-54, Sarfraz 4-46) and 465 (S.M. Gavaskar 97, C.P.S. Chauhan 93, S. Amarnath 60, G.R. Viswanath 83). Pakistan 539-6 declared (Wasim Bari 85, Zaheer Abbas 235*, Mushtaq Mohammad 67) and 182-2.
After 13 successive draws between the countries a result was finally reached, with Zaheer Abbas hitting the winning stroke in the 12th mandatory over. The second Test at Lahore was absorbing and replete with purposeful cricket. Mushtaq Mohammad asked India to take first strike and his pace due, Sarfraz and Imran, obliged by bowling India out for a low 199. Pakistan then amassed a huge total of 539 for 6 declared. Zaheer Abbas scored 235 not out (batted 6-1/2 hour and hit 29 fours and two sixes and in the process completed 2,000 runs in Tests) - the first-ever double century in an Indo-Pak Test. India-trailing by 340 - gave a brave spirited reply: 192 for the first wicket, before both Gavaskar (97) and Chauhan (93) departed to what appeared doubtful decisions. Pakistan kept nibbling way at home at the Indian innings and, when the last wicket fell at 465, had just 40 minutes plus 20 mandatory overs in which to get the 126 needed to win. Pakistan accepted the challenge and paced their innings beautifully to win comfortably by 8 wickets. The aggregate of 1331-28 is the highest for Test between India and Pakistan.
PAKISTAN V INDIA 1978-79
Third Test match: Played at National Stadium, Karachi, on 14, 15,17, 18, 19 November.
Toss: India.
Result: Pakistan won by eight wickets.
Debuts: Nil.
Umpires: Shujauddin and Mahboob Shah.
India 344 (S.M. Gavaskar 111, Kapil Dev 59, Sarfaraz 4-89) and 300 (S.M. Gavaskar 137, M. Amarnath 53, Sarfraz 5-70). Pakistan 481-9 declared (Mudassar Nazar 57, Javed Miandad 100, Mushtaq Mohammad 78) and 165-2 (Javed Miandad 63).
The third Test at Karachi followed more or less the same pattern, except that India batted batter in the first innings: 344, Gavaskar 111, Kapil Dev 59. Pakistan declared at 481 for 9 declared - a lead of 137, Imran and Sarfraz again, reduced India to 300 all out, but not before Gavaskar hit his second hundred of the match. This time Pakistan's target for victory was much more difficult 164 to win in 35 minutes plus the 20 mandatory overs. The batting order was reshuffled to bring the quick scoring batsmen to the fore - Asif Iqbal, Javed Miandad and Imran Khan. With bold hitting and fantastic running between the wickets, Majid, Miandad, Asif and Imran went hammer and tong for the winning target . The target was just beyond practical reach when Imran suddenly lifted Bedi for two towering sixes in the 16th mandatory over to close the gap to attainable limits and Pakistan were home and dry! A great victory for the home side and thoroughly well deserved because the set target was so difficult to reach in initial stages. Only with suicidal running between wickets, great courage and imaginative improvisation did the Pakistanis attain their goal.
PAKISTAN V INDIA 1982-83
Second Test Match played at National Stadium, Karachi, 23, 24,25, 27 December.
Toss: Pakistan.

India 169 (Kapil Dev 73, Abdul Qadir 4-67) and 197 (D.B. Vengsarkar 79, S. Madan Lal 52 Imran Khan 8-60). Pakistan 452 (Zaheer Abbas 186, Mudassar Nazar 119, Kapil Dev 5-102).
The principal statistical milestone of this Test match which Pakistan won comprehensively is that Imran passed 200 Test wickets with a devastating spell of fast bowling in India's second innings. The series erupted to life as Imran's magnificent pace bowling made India crash to an innings and 86 run defeat in the second Test at Karachi. In their first innings, Pakistan notched a total of 452, helped by knocks of 186 by Zaheer Abbas and 119 by Mudassar Nazar, and India needed 284 runs to avoid the innings defeat. Imran destroyed all their chances with a blistering return of 8-60 (11-79 in the match) and nothing could save India from their doom.
PAKISTAN V INDIA 1982-83

India 372 (G.R. Viswanath 53, S.M. Patil 84, S.M.H. Kirmani 66, S. Madan Lal 54, Imran Khan 6-98) and 286 (S.M. Gavaskar 127, M. Amarnath 78, Imran Khan 5-82, Sarfraz 4-79). Pakistan 652 (Javed Miandad 126, Zaheer Abbas 168, Saleem Malik 107, Imran Khan 117, Kapil Dev 7-220) and 10-0.
In the third Test at Faisalabad, Imran continued with his demolition act, this time taking 11-180 in the match and helping Pakistan to 10-wicket win. The Indians batted with some purpose this time round, Gavaskar (127*) becoming the first Indian to carry his bat through a completed Test innings, but the Pakistanis batted even better. There were four hundreds in the record first innings score of 652 - 126 by Javed Miandad, 168 by Zaheer Abbas, 107 by Saleem Malik and 117 by skipper Imran Khan. In the end, Pakistan needed only seven runs in their second innings to achieve the win.
PAKISTAN V INDIA 1982-83
Fourth Test Match played at Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19 January.
Toss: Pakistan.
Result; Pakistan won by an innings and 119 runs.
Debuts: B.S. Sandhu.
Umpires: Javed Akhtar and Khizer Hayat.
Pakistan 581-3 declared (Mudassar Nazar 231, Javed Miandad 280). India 189 (M.B. Amarnath 61, B.S. Sandhu 71, Imran Khan 6-35 and 273 (S.M. Gavaskar 60, M.B. Amarnath 64, D.B. Vengsarkar 58*, Sarfraz Nawaz 4-85).
Another overwhelming defeat awaited the Indians at Hyderabad in the fourth Test. Mudassar (231) and Miandad (280*) equalling the record for the highest partnership in Test cricket by scoring 451 runs for the third wicket stand, enabling Imran to declare at 581-3. It was Imran's fast bowling again (6-35 in the first innings) that forced India to a follow-on. Imran, Sarfraz, Qadir and Iqbal Qasim all chipped in usefully in the second innings as India slumped again, Pakistan winning by an innings and 119 runs. With three consecutive wins, Pakistan had taken an unbeatable lead in the series, with two Tests to go.
INDIA V PAKISTAN 1986-87
Fifth Test Match played at Chinaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, on 13, 14, 15, 17 March.
Toss: Pakistan.
Result; Pakistan won by 16 runs.
Debut: Nil.
Umpires: R.B. Gupta and V.K. Ramaswamy.
PAKISTAN 116 (H.B. Maninder Singh 7-27) and 249 (R.J. Shastri 4-69). India 145 (D.B. Vengaskar 50, Iqbal Qasim 5-48, Tauseef Ahmed 5-54) and 204 (S.M. Gavaskar 96, Iqbal Qasim 4-73, Tauseef Ahmed 4-85).
On the first day of the fifth and final Test at Bangalore, Pakistan's bold approach misfired and they were dismissed for their lowest total with Maninder Singh claiming 7 for 27. India in reply were 126-4 and well set to take a commanding lead, when the two spinners Tauseef Ahmed and Iqbal Qasim caused a panic by bowling them out for 145. In the second innings Pakistan batting with great determination and discipline, set India a target of 221. The third day ended with India still needing 122 runs with six wickets intact. Despite a masterly farewell Test knock by Gawaskar (96), they fell 16 runs short of their target, with the two spinners, once again taking a lion's share on a wicket which was allowing them to bowl bouncers. Off-spinner Tauseef Ahmed, asked to share the new ball with Wasim Akram, bowled untiringly for 45.5 overs, a heroic feat of the match. It was Pakistan's only third series win overseas, the first two being against New Zealand, and they ended the tour on a happy note by winning the limited-overs series by 5-1.
INDIA V PAKISTAN 1998-99
First Test Match played at the Chepauk, Chennai, 28, 29,30, 31 January, 1 February.
Toss: Pakistan.
Result; Pakistan won by 12 runs.
Debut: S. Ramesh.
Umpires: R.S. Dunne & V.K. Ramaswamy.
Pakistan 238 (Yousuf Youhana 53, Moin Khan 60, A.R. Kumble 6-70) and 286 (Shahid Afridi 141, Inzamamul Haq 51, BKV Prasad 6-33). India 254 (R S Dravid 53, S.C. Ganguly 54, Saqlain 5-54) and 258 (S.R. Tendulkar 136, N.R. Mongia 52, Saqlain Mushtaq 5-93).
Pakistan withstood a magnificent century by India's champion batsman Sachin Tendulkar to win the first Test by 12 runs in a dramatic finish at The Chepauk, Chennai. Tendulkar hit 136 as India, chasing a victory target of 271, recovered from a hopeless 82-5 to put up a brave fight and reach 254-6 before losing their last four wickets for as many runs.
Off Spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, who took five wickets in each innings, signalled Pakistan's victory in their first Test on Indian soil in 12 years by bowling Javagal Srinath before stumps on the fourth day. Some 45,000 spectators at the overflowing Chepauk and millions of TV viewers across the country watched in suspense as India set up a dream finish only to stumble at the last hurdle.
The match turned Pakistan's way when Tendulkar, suffering from back pain and visibly tired after his seven-hour vigil, lofted Saqlain for an easy catch to mid-off when 17 more were needed.
His wicket, which made it 254-7, lifted Wasim Akram's tigers, who then removed tail-enders Sunil Joshi, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath in quick succession to bowl India out for 258. The jubilant Pakistanis hugged each other, kissed the turf and then ran a lap of honour around the ground to loud applause from the crowd as Mohammad Azharuddin's men pondered the defeat. Except Tendulkar and Nayan Mongia, who made 52 in a 136-run stand for the sixth wicket, the rest of the Indian batsmen aggregated a measly 34-two less than the total extras of 36.
