Michael Vaughan has been added to the England squad for next week's One-Day International series against Sri Lanka as cover for the spinners and the likely loss of captain Nasser Hussain.
Hussain has injured his right thigh during the Third Test to add to his groin problems and it is unlikely he will feature in the ODIs. He batted with a runner during England's first innings and will do the same in the second innings if he is needed.
Fletcher said of Vaughan: "He can bat, he's a good fielder - and we have been looking to get him on to the one-day stage anyway because we think he has some talent," said Fletcher.
"He's not only a good Test player but he also has the ability to play in one-day cricket.
"We started the ball rolling after the Galle Test, and the decision was made about four or five days ago to finalise the position. Now Nasser has gone it looks an even better decision."
