Karachi Whites complete fine double with one-day title

A superb unbeaten 84 by Faraz Patel helped Karachi Whites lift the National Junior (Under-19) Grade-I One-day Cricket Championship title with a five-wicket victory over Lahore Blues in the final at Gaddafi Stadium Monday.

Karachi Whites, who set a target of 196, scored 197 in 48.5 overs. Tabish Khan lifted leg-spinner Wahab Riaz over long-off for a huge six to end the match.

By virtue of winning this tournament, Karachi Whites completed a memorable double this season as earlier they won the National Grade-I Championship.

Faraz Patel, who was adjudged as Man-of-the-Match, struck seven fours in his 143-ball innings. Skipper Khalid Latif also played a good hand in making 45 off 70 balls with seven hits to the fence.

Earlier, Lahore Blues's skipper Shahnawaz Malik decided to bat after winning the toss. The decision backfired as the home side lost five wickets for 75 in the 22nd over. However, twin brothers Asim and Atif Ijaz retrieved the position by adding 80 for the sixth-wickets. Asim scored 55 off 77 deliveries with five fours. Atif made 33 off 60 balls with the aid of three boundaries.

Off-spinner Aftab Ahmed, who was declared as best bowler of the tournament, finished with three for 40. Mohammad Ali Zafar claimed three for 37 while fellow leg-spinner Sami Faridi chipped in with two for 23.

Karachi Whites skipper Khalid Latif received a cash prize of 20,000 on behalf of his team from the ex-Test wicket-keeper Imtiaz Ahmed, who was the chief guest at the final.

Lahore Blues were awarded the runners-up prize of Rs 10,000.

Man-of-the-Match Faraz Patel pocketed Rs 5,000 while Karachi Whites' Khurram Manzoor was declared best batsman as well as best fielder of the tournament and got cash awards of Rs 2,000 each.

Aftab also received Rs 2,000 for being the best bowler. The best wicket-keeper prize of Rs 2,000 went to Lahore Blues' Adnan Akmal.
