King urges his Bashley boys to perform

Bashley (Rydal) skipper Matt King has told his players they need "to put in a performance" against Bournemouth at the BCG tomorrow (1pm) to keep their ECB Southern Electric Premier League season alive.

The derby is virtually a `last chance saloon' affair for Bashley, who have lost two of their three Premier League matches so far - as against unchanged Bournemouth, who are one of the three unbeaten teams in Division 1.

King knows that if Bashley lose to Bournemouth their season will effectively be over. "It's a long way back if you lose three of your first four games, but that's not in my script at the moment," he said.

Bashley bowled - and batted - badly against BAT Sports last weekend, eventually losing by 22 runs.

King, who took over the captaincy reins from Neil Taylor this season, will be demanding a much improved performance with both bat and ball. "We need to tighten up all round tomorrow," he said.

"We bowled the wrong length at BAT - too many long hops and half volleys, particularly in the initial 15 oversand if we do that against Bournemouth we'll get hammered," he added.

"And we didn't bat very well either - as 47-7 at one stage suggests."

Ben Nolan-Stone may replace evergreen John Whiting if he recovers from a groin injury, but Bournemouth are set to be unchanged.

Two good batting performances have set up their initial wins over South Wilts and Andover, with Richard Scott's decision to play first team cricket regularly this season a distinct bonus for the Chapel Gate club.

"It's great to have someone of his experience at the top of the order, particularly alongside teenager Nick Park, who scored a maiden SPL half-century against Andover last weekend," said vice-captain Martin Miller.

"With Adam Voges at three and Matt Swarbrick next in the list gives us a pretty useful top order."

BAT Sports and Havant, the two other unbeaten sides, face intriguing games. Dan Goldstraw's continued absence weakens BAT's bowling attack against the Hampshire Academy on the Rose Bowl Nursery Ground.

But Damian Shirazi is back from Lord's ground duties at the Zimbabwe Test Match and will be determined to again underline his batting credentials to Hampshire 2nd XI coach Tony Middleton, who will finalise his Young Hawks side after today's Under-19 match against the Royal Navy.

South Wilts, who nailed Portsmouth by eight wickets last week, face Havant without former Hampshire opener Jason Laney, Tim Lamb and James Tomlinson, who is back at Cardiff University.

Combined Services paceman Alex Senneck makes his home debut alongside Army wicketkeeper Stu Houghton.

Mackie Hobson again misses out for Havant, whose teenage all-rounder Chris Wright had a Second XI trial for Middlesex against the RAF at Uxbridge yesterday.

Calmore Sports know that a victory over Liphook & Ripsley at Loperwood Park will go a long way to securing short-term Premier Division safety.

They have already beaten the Academy this season and last week gave Havant a real run for their money before conceding a 16-run defeat.

Whereas Liphook have lost all three times so far - agonisingly so by one wicket against the Academy youngsters last week - and go to Calmore minus promising King Edward VI all-rounder Alex Richardson, who gashed a finger taking a catch last weekend.

Andover, beaten by Bournemouth last week, plan to have Toby Radford (broken finger) back against Portsmouth, alongside Mark Miller and Ian Langdown.

Hampshire's Lawrie Prittipaul is expected to return to a Portsmouth team heavily beaten by South Wilts last week.
