England v India at Durban, 26 Feb 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 1230 GMT (14:30 local)

Good day, and welcome to CricInfo's live coverage of the all-
crucial Pool A encounter between India and England at Kingsmead,
        Durban.
A win for either team in this game will go a long way towards
making sure of qualifying for the Super Six stage.
These teams have come up against each other quite a few times in
the recent past, with the most notable occasion being that famous
final at Lord's in the NatWest Series final.
But history matters little in the middle, and a World Cup pressure
game will only heighten the competitive atmosphere at Durban.
India will be only too happy to have won the toss, and Sourav
Ganguly had little hesitation in opting to bat first. India play
an unchanged team from their previous game against Namibia.
England make only one change from their last game, with Ronnie
Irani coming in for left-arm spinner Ashley Giles.
And the teams now walking out into the middle, with Sachin
Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag opening the batting for India.
Andy Caddick will open the bowling for England.
0.1 Caddick to Sehwag, one run, just on middle and leg, and Sehwag
neatly tucks it around the corner for a single to fine leg,
getting himself and India off the mark
0.2 Caddick to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, and Tendulkar fishes
at that one, hanging his bat and not getting a full stride forward
to the pitch of the ball, the ball whizzing past the outside edge
0.3 Caddick to Tendulkar, FOUR, full and drifting to leg, and Tendulkar
puts this one away well enough, clipping it off the toes sweetly
and sending the ball racing to the square leg fence
0.4 Caddick to Tendulkar, no run, outside the off, nipping back in off
the pitch into the batsman, and Tendulkar chooses to leave this
        one alone
0.5 Caddick to Tendulkar, one run, short of a length, rising on
Tendulkar, and the batsman gets on his toes and plays the ball
down nicely to fine leg for a single
0.6 Caddick to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, and Sehwag leaves the
ball alone, Caddick pitching rather wide of off stump and not
        moving off the pitch

with soft hands. Good bounce for Anderson there with his first
        ball
1.2 Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, fuller and outside the off, and
Tendulkar gets on the front foot and pushes the ball into the
        offside, towards mid off
1.3 Anderson to Tendulkar, wide: no run, down the legside, by quite a
large margin, and Tendulkar is content to lift the hands and watch
        it sail through to Stewart
1.3 Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, half volley on middle and leg, and
Tendulkar turns the ball nicely to short midwicket, where the
        fielder collects
1.4 Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, worked into the legside, and short
midwicket again runs to his left to pick up
1.5 Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, just back of a length, and Tendulkar
shuffles to off and gets behind the line of the ball nicely to
stroke the ball into the covers

forward and blocking the ball nicely, bat and pad close together,

into the deep for the single, third man running around to collect
2.3 Caddick to Tendulkar, (noball) no run, sharp nip off the pitch for

Tendulkar as he attempts to force the ball through the off
2.3 Caddick to Tendulkar, no run, dabbed into the offside, and
Tendulkar wants the run but is sent back by Sehwag
2.4 Caddick to Tendulkar, one run, trying to turn it into the legside,
Tendulkar gets a leading edge that sends the ball dribbling into
the covers for a quick single
2.5 Caddick to Sehwag, no run, loud appeal from Caddick and the slips,
but Sehwag, as he was trying to clip the ball off his pads, was
struck high and on middle and leg, so umpire Taufel turns it down
2.6 Caddick to Sehwag, no run, solid defence into the legside, where
        Caddick runs in to field

makes its way straight to the short extra cover fielder
3.2 Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, short of a length, and Tendulkar

Tendulkar leans forward and flicks the ball fine to the fine leg
        fielder to pick up one
3.4 Anderson to Sehwag, one run, full and on the off, and Sehwag is
lured into a drive and gets a thick outside edge, leaving the
right hander late to run away to third man
3.5 Anderson to Tendulkar, one run, on the middle stump, and Tendulkar
works the ball into the legside gap and runs the single fast,
        getting in comfortably
3.6 Anderson to Sehwag, no run, worked to leg, but Sehwag only finds

4.1 Caddick to Tendulkar, FOUR, short of a length, and Tendulkar

ball slips past him and goes for four
4.2 Caddick to Tendulkar, one run, outside the off, and Tendulkar prods
forward and drives, the ball sliding off the face of the bat to
the deep point region for one
4.3 Caddick to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, and additional bounce

with a vertical bat, getting behind the line of the ball and
        playing it down well
4.5 Caddick to Sehwag, no run, fuller, and Sehwag goes for the big
booming offside drive, and the ball beats the edge as Sehwag does
        not get to the pitch
4.6 Caddick to Sehwag, no run, outside the off, short of a length, and

find the fielder inside the circle

India have completed a comprehensive win here at Kingsmead, Durban
The team are in a huddle out in the middle, savouring the moment no
        doubt
It all began with Tendulkat smashing the cover off the ball for 50
at the top of the innings
Wickets then fell and India stuttered
Dravid shored up the middle order with a useful 62, Yuvraj batted
fluently for his 40 odd and India coiuld post 250 from 50 overs
No one could have been prepared for what came after
Srinath and Zaheer Khan beat the bat repeatedly but could not
        really get among the wickets
       Then came Ashish Nehra...
An amazing spell of sustained pace, swing and movement off the
wicket saw Nehra take 6/23 from 10 overs and wreck the England
        batting line up
England never really recovered, although Andy Flintoff batted
brilliantly to reach 64 off 73 balls
India however were just too good on the day and collect four
        valuable points from this match
There's really no doubting who the Man of the Match will be,
although we need to wait for the official presentation ceremony
that will no doubt declare Ashish Nehra as the Man of the Match
It's official. Ashish Nehra is the Man of the Matchg!
