Good day and welcome to the live coverage an all-too-crucial Pool A
game, between India and Pakistan.
If one were to discount the Australia-England rivalry - and even
that has decreased in intensity as the gap between the teams
increased - this contest is the most fiery in world cricket.
Traditional rivalry counts for only some percentage of the reasons
for the tension and competitive spirit that prevails on the field
during an India-Pakistan match.
Both teams have been known to plumb the depths of despair and the
heights of brilliance within short spans of time, and that always
enhances the uncertainty factor during the game.
The cirumstances this time around only drive up the stakes. Not
only do both fans in the respective countries expect thumping
wins, but a win would make progress into the Super Six
considerably easier for both teams.
The talent on either side provides yet another fascinating aspect
of a crucial encounter.
Many mini-battles will play themselves out during the game. Sachin
vs Akram. Sehwag vs Shoaib. Ganguly vs Waqar. Saeed Anwar vs
Kumble. The list just goes on.
The pressure in this game being as intense as it already is,
Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis had little hesitation in opting to
bat first, avoiding the pressure of chasing and batting second.
India make one change from their successful line-up against
England, with veteran leggie Anil Kumble replacing Harbhajan Singh
as the lone spinner.
