India v New Zealand at Centurion, 14 Mar 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0800 GMT (10:00 local)

Good day and welcome to CricInfo's live coverage of the Super Six
tie between India and New Zealand at Centurion.
India are already into the semi-finals, but for New Zealand, this
is a crucial game, one they must win if they are to go on to the
next stage of this World Cup.
The fourth spot in the semi-final is essentially to be fought
between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, and if the latter win this
game, they will go on to clash with Australia in the first semi-
        final.
A New Zealand loss here, on the other hand, followed by a Sri
Lankan win against Zimbabwe, will give the Lankans that semi-final
        berth against Australia.
India, on the other hand, will be looking to further boost their
confidence. They are to play their semi-final against Kenya, a
match that is unlikely to prove testing, but they must be in fine
        fettle for the final.
Some Indian fans may also view this as a match in which India's 5-2
loss in an ODI series in New Zealand can be avenged.
Even Stephen Fleming seems unwilling to let memories of that series
go, saying before the game that New Zealand would be looking to
reopen those very wounds in the Indian side.
The pitch at SuperSport Park, Centurion, looks a real belter, so it
was something of a surprise when Sourav Ganguly opted to bowl
        first after winning the toss.
India play an unchanged side, while New Zealand bring in Daryl
Tuffey and Craig McMillan for Andre Adams and Lou Vincent.
       Teams:
New Zealand: Stephen Fleming (captain), Craig McMillan, Nathan
Astle, Scott Styris, Chris Cairns, Chris Harris, Brendon McCullum,
Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey, Shane Bond
India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar,
Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Mongia, Javagal
Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh
Zaheer Khan to open the bowling for India, while New Zealand open
with Stephen Fleming and Craig McMillan.
0.1 Khan to McMillan, no run, and a loud shout for leg before to start
off with, the ball pitching on middle and leg and nipping back
just a touch, taking inside edge onto pad, that being the element
        that defeats the appeal
0.2 Khan to McMillan, OUT: fuller delivery, on middle and leg, and
McMillan shuffles to the off and tries to flick it away to leg,
but he cannot keep the shot down on the ground, and the ball
accurately finds Harbhajan at square leg inside the circle

Fantastic start for India, wicket off the very second delivery of
the innings, and Craig McMillan continues what has been a poor
World Cup for him thus far.
0.3 Khan to Astle, OUT: and anudder! Zaheer goes up in loud appeal as
the ball pitches on middle and leg and straightens, and Astle
plays outside the line, misses, and is struck on the pads plumb in
front of the stumps, no doubt about that one whatsoeve

Two wickets in two balls for Zaheer Khan, and New Zealand, after
being asked to bat first on a good track, are reeling at zero for
        two.
Styris to face the hat trick ball
0.4 Khan to Styris, two runs, full ball, Zaheer trying for the yorker
evidently, and the ball is overpitched outside off, Styris driving
down the ground to the left of the bowler for two runs, not only
avoiding the hat-trick but getting his side off the mark
0.5 Khan to Styris, FOUR, full delivery again, this time on middle and
leg, and Styris on the front foot flicks the ball away in front of
square on the legside, between square leg and midwicket, and gets
        four for the stroke
0.6 Khan to Styris, one run, movement for Zaheer here, the ball angled
across Styris and combined with the movement squaring the batsman
up just a touch, the ball sliding off the bat face to third man
        for a single

Srinath to partner Zaheer with the new ball
1.1 Srinath to Styris, no run, angled into the batsman, on middle and
leg, and Styris shuffles to off and works it away off the hips on
the ground to square leg inside the circle
1.2 Srinath to Styris, wide: no run, sliding down the legside this
time, Styris shuffles to off and thinks about tryng to tickle it
through to fine leg and decides against it in the end
1.2 Srinath to Styris, no run, outside the off, just back of a length,
and Styris moves across but leaves the ball alone in the end,
shouldering arms. Nice carry for Srinath there.
1.3 Srinath to Styris, no run, on the off, nipping back into the right
hander a touch, and Styris tries to shuffle to off and work the
ball to leg and misses, the ball striking thigh and falling down
        dead at his feet
1.4 Srinath to Styris, no run, beaten! just short of a length, moving
away from the right hander late, and Styris tries to probe at the
ball, feet not going anywhere, and the ball beats the outside edge
1.5 Srinath to Styris, no run, defended more solidly this time, body
right behind the line of the ball, the full face of the bat
meeting the ball and sending it trickling into the offside
1.6 Srinath to Styris, no run, another beaut from Srinath! this one is
fuller and Styris comes forward and is beaten as the ball moves
off the pitch and towards the slips, beating the outside edge of
        Styris' bat

2.1 Khan to Fleming, no run, Fleming's first ball of the match, the
ball just on off and moving in a touch, and Fleming chooses to
leave the ball alone, it strikes thigh outside the off stump, so
no lbw shout for a shot not offered
2.2 Khan to Fleming, (noball) no run, outside the off, and Zaheer
oversteps on this occasion, Fleming leaving this one alone as well
        outside the off
2.2 Khan to Fleming, one run, the New Zealand captain gets off the mark
with that delivery, gliding the ball to third man and getting a
        single
2.3 Khan to Styris, three runs, lovely shot from Styris, the batsman
pouncing on the half volely and stroking it through the gap
between point and cover, getting three runs as the fielder just
manages to pull the ball back inside the circle
2.4 Khan to Fleming, no run, pushed back down the wicket, Fleming
        defending that one easily enough
2.5 Khan to Fleming, two runs, on middle stump, and Fleming converts
that by moving to off and flicking th eball off his pads, sending
it into the midwicket gap for a brace
2.6 Khan to Fleming, FOUR, Fleming gets his first boundary, the ball
pitched up outside the off, and the batsman getting the front foot
nicely to the pitch and driving sweetly through the covers, timed
very well indeed that stroke, showing the form that Fleming is in

his toes and works the ball down almost off his hips, down to fine
        leg for a single
3.2 Srinath to Fleming, no run, good leave from Fleming, the ball just
outside the off and looking to maintain its line, good judgement
from the batsman in the final analysis
3.3 Srinath to Fleming, no run, easier decision for Fleming to leave
that one, the ball angled across the left hander and moving
        further away towards the slips
3.4 Srinath to Fleming, no run, just a touch shorter this one, and
Fleming on the back foot punches the ball into the covers
powerfully, defensive shot timed well so that the ball races to
        the fielder
3.5 Srinath to Fleming, wide: no run
3.5 Srinath to Fleming, no run, outside the off stump, Fleming leaves
this one alone again, making an early decision to stride forward
and lift his bat high in the air to avoid th eball
3.6 Srinath to Fleming, one run, pushed delicately into the offside,
and Fleming calls early for the single on this occasion and gets
it, some slight hesitation from Styris notwithstanding

4.1 Khan to Fleming, FOUR, angled into the batsman, and although the
ball is only on off stump, Fleming moves across and flicks the
ball into the legside with consummate ease, driving the ball to
        the midwicket fence, superb shot
4.2 Khan to Fleming, (noball) no run, Zaheer now coming around the
wicket, and promptly oversteps as the unfamiliar angle gives him
        some starting trouble
4.2 Khan to Fleming, no run, angled across Fleming, fullish delivery
that the New Zealand captain leaves alone, the ball carrying
        through to Dravid quite nicely
4.3 Khan to Fleming, FOUR, drifting on the leg stump, and Fleming picks
off that full delivery quite nicely, just getting enough bat on it
for the ball to race to the fine leg fence, beating the fielder
        stationed on the ropes
4.4 Khan to Fleming, one run, on middle stump, and Fleming's move to
off converts that into a ball on the pads, which the batsman then
flicks away again to fine leg for a single this time
4.5 Khan to Styris, no run, outside the off, and Styris gets high on
his toes but keeps his bat well away from the line of the ball
4.6 Khan to Styris, no run, on the middle and leg stump, fullish
delivery that Styris drives straight to the fielder stationed just
inside the inner circle at mid on

5.1 Srinath to Fleming, no run, full and on the middle and off, and
Fleming is lured onto his front foot, the ball's movement then
taking it across the bat face, a slight edge into the covers
5.2 Srinath to Fleming, one run, short of a length, and Fleming
immediately gets on his toes and uses his height well to play the
ball down safely and to the third man fielder for a single
5.3 Srinath to Styris, no run, short of a length, much too much outside
the off to tempt Styris into the stroke, and the batsman leaves
        well enough alone
5.4 Srinath to Styris, one run, dug in a touch shorter, and Styris
shuffles to off and turns the ball easily enough into the gap
between midwicket and mid on for a single
5.5 Srinath to Fleming, one run, on the pads, and Fleming clips that
one away off his toes and to the right of the fine leg fielder,
who has to run around on the boundary to field as the batsmen
        cross for a single
5.6 Srinath to Styris, no run, short of a length, just outside the off,

and Fleming is in two minds about whether to leave it or not,
finally ends up trying to withdraw and gets some bat on it in the
process, the ball bobbling away into the offside
6.2 Nehra to Fleming, no run, better leave this time, Fleming spotting
the length early and choosing to shuffle to off and leave the ball
        to thud into Dravid's gloves
6.3 Nehra to Fleming, no run, another leave from Fleming, the ball this
time seaming away from the left hander after passing the stumps,
Dravid collecting almost in front of first slip
6.4 Nehra to Fleming, no run, shorter ball, and Fleming turns it with a
flick of the wrists but straight to the fielder inside the circle
        on the legside
6.5 Nehra to Fleming, no run, back of a length, just outside the off,
and Fleming defends the ball into the offside, just short of

7.2 Srinath to Styris, no run, short of a length, outside the off
stump, and Styris tentatively pokes at that one, the ball sliding
off the face of the bat to the backward point fieldsman
7.3 Srinath to Styris, no run, more assured stroke this time, Styris
deliberately trying to beat backward point, but Yuvraj Singh at
that position is too swift for that
7.4 Srinath to Styris, three runs, drifting dwon the legs, and Styris
flicks the ball away in front of square on the legside, Harbhajan
half-stops the ball inside the circle, so the batsmen only run
three as Tendulkar runs into the outfield to collect
7.5 Srinath to Fleming, no run, half volley length, but the line is too
close to Fleming for any stroke to be played, so Fleming strides
forward and defends into the offside

Match State: Innings Break

So India set themselves 147 to win, not at all a target that will
dismay them as they walk off the field for the break.
Some may have been surprised with Sourav Ganguly's decision to bowl
first, but his bowlers repaid his trust in full, shuttling New
        Zealand out cheaply.
As he has done often in the recent past, Zaheer Khan led the pack,
picking four wickets, and he was well backed up by the remaining
        bowlers.
New Zealand will now have to bowl exceedingly well if they are to
bundle out India, and whether they will actually do that we will
find out on the other side of the half-hour break.
The Indian chase is about to get underway in minutes, New Zealand
just setting the field to Sehwag
Tuffey to open the bowling forNnew Zealand

0.1 Tuffey to Sehwag, one run, on the pads, turned away behind square
on the legside, and Sehwag runs the single and wants the second
but is sent back by Tendulkar
0.2 Tuffey to Tendulkar, no run, on middle and leg, and Tendulkar moves

        midwicket fielder
0.3 Tuffey to Tendulkar, no run, more on target this time with the
line, the ball on middle and off, Tendulkar pushing the ball into
        the legside defensively
0.4 Tuffey to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, outside the off, and
Tendulkar leaves this one alone, raising the bat high above his
        head as he does so
0.5 Tuffey to Tendulkar, one run, on middle and leg, worked away in
front of square leg for a single, getting off the mark
0.6 Tuffey to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, and Sehwag gets behind

        hand
India notch up their seventh win in a row, maintaining their run of
good form leading into the semifinals of this World Cup.
New Zealand on the other hand will be disappointed with their
performance in this crunch game, and they must hope for Sri Lanka
to lose to Zimbabwe tomorrow to get through to the semifinals.
India were boosted hugely by their suddenly-potent pace
triumvirate, Zaheer Khan doing the bulk of the damage today with
        four wickets.
And after Shane Bond had India reeling at 21 for three, Mohammad
Kaif and Rahul Dravid played sensible, solid cricket to take their
        side home.
