Chairman of selectors and member of the Cricket Board interim committee Sidath Wettimuny has requested Sports Minister S.B.Dissanayake to bring forward the date of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka elections, as the date set for it is ill-timed in view of the cricket tours here by Pakistan and South Africa.
The Sports Minister has set June 11 as the date for the elections, but Wettimuny states "as two important tours of Pakistan and South Africa begin on June 8, this will be most disruptive to the administration and especially to the cricket team which is doing well at this moment of time". Wettimuny also draws the Minister's attention to the fact that these tours are crucal as Sri Lanka would, if successful, emerge as the No. 2 side in world ratings, at the end of the series.
He therefore suggests the elections be brought forward immediately and held before the end of May to give the new office bearers time to settled down before the two important tours.
