Holland v Pakistan

At Paarl, February 25, 2003

15-Apr-2004
At Paarl, February 25, 2003. Pakistan won by 97 runs. Toss: Holland.
With the result never in serious doubt, the spotlight centred on Wasim Akram, who began the match needing just one wicket to become the first to 500 in one-day internationals. The 36-year-old Wasim, playing his 354th game, admitted that, "like any youngster", he had been unable to sleep the previous night. But when Holland set off in pursuit of an improbable 254, he did not have to wait long: with his seventh ball he bowled Statham for a duck and wheeled away, whooping. His 500th wicket came 18 years and a day after his first, Robbie Kerr of Australia. Holland quickly subsided to 43 for four, and although van Bunge chipped in with a feisty 31, including a swat for six off Saqlain Mushtaq, they needed a generous helping of extras (the topscorer, with 40) to take them past 150. Earlier, Yousuf Youhana dug a lackadaisical Pakistan out of a spot of bother with a run-a-ball 58, after Inzamam-ul-Haq had failed yet again. That set the stage for Wasim.
Man of the Match: Yousuf Youhana. Attendance: 5,508.
