INDIA v PAKISTAN

Toss: Pakistan.

15-Apr-1998
Toss: Pakistan.
More rain washed out Sunday, disappointing around 5,000 spectators, some from as far as New York. Very few attended on Monday when Pakistan took the series. They grabbed first use of a pitch which did not allow the ball to come on to the bat. The out-of-touch Aamir Sohail anchored the innings, and Salim Malik, Pakistan's most capped one-day player with 235 games, passed 6,000 runs. They promised to set a target well out of India's reach until a comedy of run-out errors dissipated the tail. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, who was swinging the ball splendidly, then made the most of the worn pitch. As the asking-rate climbed, the anxious batsmen tried to charge Mushtaq Ahmed; they paid the penalty as he collected five wickets in a limited-overs international for the first time. Though Mushtaq's team triumphed, it was his fellow leg-spinner, Kumble, who was named man of the series. He was easily the leading bowler, with 13 wickets at 12.23.
Man of the Match: Mushtaq Ahmed. Man of the Series: A. Kumble.
