Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka's momentum provider, was sawn off by a poor bat-pad decision in the first innings after he had scored an aggressive century. And in the second, with Sri Lanka battling for survival, Dilshan padded up to an offbreak from Harbhajan Singh and was given lbw for 16. Replays showed the ball would have missed leg stump.
After Dilshan's dismissal, Tharanga Paranavitana added 90 for the second wicket with Kumar Sangakkara and Sri Lanka were making slow but steady progress. Shortly after he reached his half-century, though, Sreesanth hit Paranavitana's pad with an outswinger and had him lbw. It began a middle-order wobble.
As India, slowly but surely, made progress in their quest for victory, Sangakkara offered gallant resistance. He could not be dislodged, scoring an unbeaten century at one end while batsmen came and went at the other. His innings whittled the deficit to double figures and gave Sri Lanka a chance of making India bat again.
