Kenya were already through to the Super Sixes, West Indies were already going home - this was a game with no fuse to light. West Indies certainly looked uninspired when batting, though a century from Gayle - who shared a first-wicket stand of 122 with Chanderpaul - contained moments of delight, especially two exquisite sixes. But once Lara was caught by David Obuya, the innings petered out. The West Indian bowling, however, was a revelation, driven by Drakes but sparked by Lawson, the seriously quick bowler who until now had seemingly been forgotten by the selectors, despite pleas from West Indian journalists. He bowled accurately and fast - about 95mph when knocking Odumbe on to his stumps for a duck. Drakes, who bowled his ten overs straight through, taking out five of the top seven in the process, lifted his tally of wickets against Bangladesh and the non-Test nations in one-day internationals to 23 wickets at 9.08.
