Pakistan v South Africa

15-Apr-2004

At Lahore, October 5, 2003 (day/night). Pakistan won by 42 runs. Toss: South Africa.
A comfortable Pakistan win will be remembered for an ugly incident in the 13th over of the day, when Hall appeared to block Yousuf Youhana's path with his elbow as the batsman took a single. Youhana responded by pointing his bat in Hall's direction and the umpire Nadeem Ghauri was forced to step between the pair to stop the matter getting out of hand. Smith joined in with an expletive aimed at Youhana and, although neither umpire nor the teams reported the matter to referee Clive Lloyd, ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed ordered a hearing when he viewed a video of the incident four days later. Hall was given a tour-ending ban of one one-day international and two Tests, Smith was suspended for a single one-day international while Youhana, viewed more as sinned against than sinning, was fined 50% of his match fee. As for the cricket, South Africa self-destructed in pursuit of 268, with three batsmen falling to sweep shots and three more run out by direct hits, two of them from the dynamic Mohammad Sami. However, Inzamam-ul- Haq damaged his right hamstring while batting and Youhana led the side in the field. Both sets of players were fined 10% of their match fees for slow over-rates with Smith and Inzamam, the captains, receiving 20% fines.
Man of the Match: Mohammad Sami.
