South Africa kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the Super Six with a bloodless victory, achieved without Donald, who was omitted from the side on his home ground. They managed well enough without him. Spearheaded by Pollock, South Africa reduced Bangladesh to 33 for five, then 56 for six, Dippenaar helping out with three sharp catches in the slips. Khaled Masud and Khaled Mahmud did their best to ensure a measure of respectability, adding 35 before Ntini mopped up to leave South Africa a straightforward task. They completed it in only 12 overs as Gibbs and Kirsten successfully set about boosting their team's net run-rate. It was their ninth century opening stand in one-day internationals. As far as Bangladesh's confidence was concerned, their captain's post-match verdict - "This defeat is really bad for us" - was not overstating the case.
