15-Apr-2004
At Port-of-Spain, May 25, 2003. West Indies won by 39 runs. Toss: West Indies. One-day international debut: D. E. Bernard.

At last, after 21 matches spanning four and a half months and ten different opponents, Australia lost a one-day international. The defeat also ended a run of 11 one-day victories over West Indies, whose last win had come over four years previously. Lara admitted after the match that his team remained in awe of Australia's ultra-professional approach. On this occasion, though, their preparation and professionalism were little help after Lara and Hinds put on 178 for the second wicket and provided the perfect foundation for a late assault which lifted West Indies to a commanding 290. For once, there was no response from Australia, and although all their batsmen made starts, only Symonds passed 50. Lara could not resist crowning the moment by bowling the final over.

Man of the Match: B. C. Lara.
