Lancashire inflicted the first defeat of the season on Championship leaders, Sussex, with a powerful two-day win at Liverpool. Sajid Mahmood captured the first five-wicket haul of his career as Lancashire raced through the Sussex second innings. Mahmood's first spell was key as he grabbed three wickets in his first three overs, including Murray Goodwin, and Sussex were seven down before moving into the lead. He returned to end a counter-attacking half-century from Chris Adams, leaving Lancashire the simple task of 68 for victory. Lancashire's decisive lead of 99 was due to a last-wicket stand of 57 between Dominic Cork and Gary Keedy. Cork hit three sixes after Jason Lewry and Mushtaq Ahmed had brought Sussex back into contention.

Michael Lumb cracked a career-best 144 but was overshadowed by further evidence of Michael Vaughan's return to fitness. Yorkshire recovered from a rocky start against Middlesex, when Chris Silverwood grabbed two early strikes against his former county, but Vaughan settled and led the fightback with Lumb. Vaughan wasn't at his fluent best and fell one short of a century, against Jamie Dalrymple, after 187 balls. When Vaughan went, Lumb surged forward and reach three figure off 245 balls before becoming Silverwood's third victim late in the day.

Warwickshire's seamers hit back hard after Durham had dominated the first two sessions of the day at Edgbaston. Ian Bell made a welcome half-century, but the Warwickshire batting struggled as Ottis Gibson took four and Graham Onions three. However, the home attack found similar success when Heath Streak removed the Durham openers before Lee Daggatt grabbed two for himself to bring Warwickshire right back into the match.

Mark Cosgrove pounded Derbyshire's attack with a stunning unbeaten 233 at the County Ground to give Glamorgan firm control of this match and help banish memories of their slump last week. Still 21-years-old - until next week - and in just his 29th first-class match Cosgrove smacked an unbeaten 233 from 258 balls to hand Glamorgan a first-innings lead of 51 by the close, with seven wickets in hand. Earlier, Robert Croft brought up his 900th first-class wicket en route to a five-wicket haul as he polished off Derbyshire, who slid from 279 for 6 overnight to 327. Croft is only the third English-qualified bowler playing currently to achieve that feat, along with Andrew Caddick and Martin Bicknell, and he was applauded warmly after beating Ian Hunter with his turn to bring up the milestone.

Bludgeoning only goes half way to describing it.There were runs galore for Worcestershire, who made 444 for 3 as Somerset's bowlers struggled to say the least. Graeme Hick and Ben Smith had each made an unbeaten century by the close, and their fourth-wicket partnership is so far worth a monstrous 274. Phil Jaques and Stephen Moore cashed in earlier with half-centuries recorded half-centuries. Jaques made 88 before he fell to Charl Willoughby, who was the only bowler to take a wicket all day; he managed three. Hick's hundred was the 129th of his career, going past Graham Gooch and joining Sir Leonard Hutton in equal eighth position in the century-makers' chart.
