A fast bowler who swung the ball away from right-handers, Philip Whitcombe won Blues for Oxford in 1947, 1948 and 1949 but his real claim to fame came in 1948 when playing one of a handful of games for Middlesex. He opened the bowling against the Australians and in his first spell had Bill Brown lbw and then Don Bradman caught at short fine-leg for 6 - and all in front of the King and Queen. A fortnight earlier he had routed Cambridge in the Varisty match, taking 7 for 51 in their first innings as Oxford won by an innings. After leaving university he played for MCC and latterly Free Foresters, becoming their president. He was a captain in the Royal Artillary.
