A left-arm spinner and right-hand bat, Tom Smith toured the South East counties with spells at Sussex, Surrey and Middlesex before going on loan to Gloucestershire in 2013, a move that was made permanent later in the year with a three-year contract.
He made his first-class debut for Sussex in 2006 but by the end of 2012 had only played another 10 matches. He was given more of a chance in one-day cricket, mainly for Middlesex whom he joined in 2010 and took a useful 38 wickets at 25.15 in T20 with a best of 5 for 24 against Kent in 2010.
Smith was Gloucestershire's No. 1 spinner in 2014 and took 32 wickets at 40.43. He showed an eye for the special occasion when he marked the official opening of the Bristol Pavilion with a hat-trick against local rivals Somerset in the Yorkshire Bank 40-over competition. He was also a member of the Gloucestershire side that won the Royal London One-Day Cup against Surrey in 2015.
