cleaned up! What a way to finish it. Good length, quick, and far too good for the No. 10 as it zips past the bat and into the top of middle stump
Sri Lanka vs Australia, 2nd ODI at Kandy, SL v AUS, Jun 16 2022 - Match Result
What a finish! Sri Lanka win by 26 runs (on DLS) to bring some more joy to the supporters in great scenes. Australia will wonder what went wrong there. The final collapse was 5 for 19, but it was a fairly sloppy chase right through. After the spinners kept Sri Lanka in the game it was the two fiery quicks who produced the goods at the end. After all that, the series is 1-1 heading back to Colombo. Fantastic stuff from the home side. They know they can challenge Australia.
Here's a stat from Sampath: 5 for 19 is Australia's worst 5-wicket collapse in an ODI chase since 5 for 14 in the 1998 Tri-series final vs South Africa. (221 for 5 to 235 all-out in a 242-run chase)
Bilal: "Let's not forget Dushmantha Chameeras efforts. Everyone called for a better performance from him to better support the spinners after the first game....and look how he turned out... AMAZING!" He was superb. He's an excellent bowler. Has real pace.
Chamika Karunaratne is player of the match: "After a long time I was waiting for this moment. I know I can do well and it's come today and I'm so happy about it. Everything is planning...I'm always thinking out of the box. I'm always challenging batsmen. I always like to take a risk."
Aaron Finch "The fielding, we were very poor. Guys getting starts and not going on, similar to the last game. It was very poor [in the field]...we could have attacked the ball more. Chasing in these conditions is something we need to keep improving on. Tonight showed we were off the pace a bit."
Dasun Shanaka "The Australians bowled really well so were short a few runs...but had a good feeling my bowlers would defend the target. We need to come up with the right options [with the bat]. Chamika is a born warrior and whenever I throw the ball he delivers. I had a lot of trust in [Dunith Wellalage] as well. When I threw the ball he's ready to take the chance."
On that note, I'll wrap things up there for tonight. Fantastic effort from Sri Lanka to level the series and it has set up what should be a terrific three games in Colombo. We'll be back on Sunday for the first of those but for now, from Gnasher, Alex and Chandan it's goodbye and thanks for joining us.
Hayes: "Hard to believe that half of this side are World Cup winners in this format. This has been a woefully constructed chase. I credit Sri Lanka as much as I am frustrated with Australia."
Hashan: "Wellalage is showing signs of a most wanted genuine all-rounder for SL."
comes round the wicket, full outside off stump, doesn't connect with his drive
quick and short, glanced over the keeper! Well-directed, but Hazlewood played this nicely with a glide to fine third
short at off stump, backs away a touch and plays to point
Josh Hazlewood is the last batter. Cries of "Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka" ring around the ground
dragged on! Good length outside off, he goes for a big drive and it clatters into the stumps. Sri Lanka nearly there
short of a length, straight, worked off the body to deep square and they make the second...looked tight for a moment. A more friendly bounce on the return and it might have been
round the wicket, full outside off, driven to deep cover
huge appeal for a glove down the leg side! Short of a length and he has as spar at it. No reviews left, and it's called wide
Well, it's been a hectic 24 hours for Matt Kuhnemann...
another top edge, brilliantly taken at deep square leg! The crowd goes wild. And it's the youngster in the field. Cummins was done for pace by this short delivery, he was cramped for room, couldn't keep it down but Wellalage still had to make a lot of ground and did superbly diving forward
short of a length, straight, pushed into the covers
lets a short ball go through
crunched! He's nailed that one. Full at off stump, a stand-and-deliver drive straight of mid-on
Yugeesha Bimsar: "I can understand it was poor judgement by Carey and Cummins. However, you got to appreciate the fitness and commitment of Chamika. The last ball of the over, and the chase given with full speed and getting rife of the ball instantly." - Quite right. I'd missed initially that it was Chamika who chased it
huge swing and a miss! Good length, slower ball, and Cummins almost throws himself off his feet aiming to the leg side
back of a length outside off, played to backward point
Mitchell Swepson at No. 9 - 39 runs is now a lot of runs. Neither batter has yet to face a ball. Slip in place
he's been run out! Trying to get back for a second. What a crazy over this has been. Karunaratne came round the wicket, Carey tucked the ball from outside off into midwicket and he pushed for a second that was always going to be tight. A brilliant chase from his follow through by the bowler
great shot! That's the best of Carey so far. Full outside off, he drives through the line with power and placement
Lakwin: "The match position now and a ball previously is a juxtaposition. Maxwell in - AUS totally on top. Now - anyone's game. "
full at middle and leg, defended
full outside off, steered through backward point and a fumble at third allows the second. Might have been tight with a clean pick up
So, what does Australia's tail have? It's Pat Cummins at No. 8. Thiru: "So Maxwell the big Wall standing between the Sri Lankans and the victory." A slightly less big wall now...
high into the off side, taken at cover! Oh boy, that's a moment. Went for another short one, pace on this time, Maxwell pulled and spliced it high into the air. There was nearly confusion between two fielders but it's safe in the end
a slower short ball, loops through outside off
