Northants downed by Collingwood hat-trick

Paul Collingwood claimed a hat-trick in taking 5 for 6 to dismiss Northamptonshire for 47, the lowest score in English Twenty20 cricket, at Chester-le-Street. The previous lowest was 67 by Sussex against Hampshire at Hove in 2004, but the depleted Steelbacks fell 20 short of that as they were all out in 12.5 overs and lost by 97 runs.

In his second over Collingwood first persuaded Bilal Shafayat to sky a catch to mid-off then bowled David Willey and 17-year-old Norfolk lad Oliver Stone, who was making his senior debut. It was the second hat-trick in this season's Friends Life t20 competition following Wahib Riaz's effort for Kent against Gloucestershire.

Durham's win took them back into fourth place in the northern group and they will scrape into the quarter-finals with six wins and six defeats unless Worcestershire pip them by winning at Trent Bridge tomorrow.

Bottom of the group and already without Chaminda Vaas, Mal Loye and David Sales, Northants rested skipper Andrew Hall and brought in Stone, while handing the reins to Johan Botha. He must have thought his bowlers had done a reasonable job in restricting Durham to 144 for 7 after they chose to bat.

But Rob White was caught off a leading edge at cover off the first ball of the second over, bowled by the recalled Graham Onions. The other opener, 19-year-old Rob Keogh, could not get the ball off the square. He allowed Mitch Claydon to send down his second maiden in successive games before edging Onions to Phil Mustard.

When Botha sliced a catch to third man it was 14 for 3 and Collingwood took the next five wickets before Claydon weighed in with the last two to finish with 3 for 6. Only Niall O'Brien, with 14 not out, reached double figures.

Collingwood again failed with the bat, making 12 off 13 balls before he stepped across to the off side and tried to flip a straight ball from David Willey to fine leg. He missed and was bowled. Dale Benkenstein and Gareth Breese again showed how it is done, adding 43 in 3.4 overs following their unbroken stand of 65 at Edgbaston on Monday.

Benkenstein's unbeaten 31 off 19 balls took his aggregate in the last three games to 116 with only one dismissal. He helped steer the home side to 144 but then the pain really started for the Steelbacks.
