tucked off the pads, just wide of Gayle at leg slip
West Indies vs Australia, 38th Match, Group 1 at Abu Dhabi, T20 World Cup, Nov 06 2021 - Match Result
Australia won by 8 wickets (with 22 balls remaining)
David Warner and Marsh's 124-run partnership is AUS's highest for the 2nd wicket in T20Is, breaking the record of 117 between David Warner and Steven Smith
Australia win by eight wickets and have given their net run-rate another boost. They are very close to the semi-finals now. They will know for sure in a few hours after England-South Africa. The latter part of that game felt like a farewell party for Gayle and Bravo. We know for sure that Bravo is done, but we are yet to have confirmation from Gayle. Magnificent careers for both of them. But Australia were superb today. They responded excellently to a strong start from the West Indies openers, led by Josh Hazlewood, and knocked off the runs at a canter thanks to David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. The Australians are creating a guard of honour for Bravo and Gayle who are both autographing the camera. They are applauded off the field. Bravo has a little champion dance with Warner.
Man of the match David Warner "Felt satisfying to be there at the end. The key was to play my natural game. It's about targeting the first two balls and I was able to do that. [Our bowlers] have been outstanding. We knew they would come out hard against us. We know the firepower West Indies have and got to a very competitive total. DJ [Bravo] has been a benchmark for all players coming through, and Chris, he's someone I look up to."
Our coverage of England-South Africa has started here with all the latest on the maths.
Kieron Pollard: "Overall it's been a disappointing campaign. In terms of the batting we have not done well at all. Our bowling has been decent but not good enough. It's the end of a generation, we have some guys who have done good things for T20 cricket in our team and around the world. We as people are very proud. We have to look at the way we play T20 cricket. What we've seen is that one guy in the top four has to bat as long as possible. Going forward need to do that better. We have to start from a foundation now."
Aaron Finch: "It was a really pleasing day. I thought it was going to be a long day the way Evin Lewis played. We held our nerve nicely. The way [David] managed his innings, got off to a flyer and allowed Mitch Marsh to get into his innings. He's been a super player for a long time. Can't understand why people doubted him. We have to wait for the South Africa-England game and keep our fingers crossed. I'm sure someone will be streaming it. If it doesn't go our way we can hold our head high that we won four out of five."
I'll wrap things up for this match. Head over and join our coverage of the next one. It's been a victory for Australia today and a couple of farewells (it looked like) from West Indies. From Gnasher and Saurabh it's goodbye and thanks for joining us.
full at the toes, clipped to backward square
Chase to bowl. Slip and a leg slip
driven to mid-off, Gayle has a wicket! And he hugs Mitchell Marsh. Not sure Marsh really appreciated that. A full ball, Marsh trying to finish, thumps his drive but head-height to Holder
pushed off the pads to deep square leg
angled into the pads, tucked backward of square, Warner sprints back for the second and hurls himself across the crease. Not sure that was entirely needed
a lofted drive inside out over cover, much more control in that
missed stumping! Pushes this down the leg side, Warner stumbles out of his crease but Pooran can't gather
now he reverse sweeps, picks out short third man...plenty of smiles from Gayle
sweeps again, appeal for a catch down the leg side
round the wicket, Warner starts a reverse sweep then goes for the conventional sweep
Here he is! Chris Gayle
full at off stump, driven down to long-off. The end of a great career. Well bowled, DJ Bravo.
Bravo's last ball for West Indies
that's huge over square leg! A length ball on leg stump, Warner gets underneath and pulls it high and handsome
goodness me! Bravo over the wicket, it's a slower ball angling across, Warner switches his hands, dances across the crease, and swats it out to deep point
full and wide outside off, picks out mid-off on the edge of the ring
Jigar Shah: "Warner's form means Aus is now serious contender for winning the Tournament. "
full toss on the pads, aims to flick it away, only comes off the pad yet they can take two
swings across the line and sends it backward of square, a tumbling save on the ope
full outside leg stump, just misses the boot, given wide
Tonmoy: "We will miss you universe boss." Here's Bravo final over in international cricket
misses a drive this time, defeated by the change of pace
clips a low full toss down to long-on and takes Marsh to a 28-ball fifty. He hasn't lost that form
down to third man again! Swings hard at a full delivery outside off, flies squarer off the edge this time, the other side of short third man, and races away
