As it happened - Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians, IPL 2022, Brabourne stadium, Mumbai

By Sidharth Monga

Over and out

And that's it for tonight. A side known for its six-hitting has lost trying to steal singles and doubles. Will they question that part of their game? We leave you with a teaser from our report. Thanks for joining us.
"Almost out of the tournament, needing a lot of rain in the rest of the tournament to stay alive, Mumbai Indians still gave their raucous home crowd something to cheer about, defending eight runs in the last over with six Gujarat Titans wickets in hand.
Titans, who have snatched win from the defeats of jaw on a few occasions earlier in the tournament with some incredible six-hitting, took the defeat out of a victory’s grasp thanks to quick ones and twos that resulted in run-outs.
For about 33 overs between the Mumbai powerplay and the last over of the match, Titans looked on track for a win that would all but seal their qualifications to the play-offs. They restricted Mumbai to 177 despite a flying start, Rohit Sharma’s best in all IPL matches. Then both their openers got fifties followed by quick innings from Hardik Pandya and David Miller. However, thanks to the run-outs, Titans contrived to lose on a night that Jasprit Bumrah went for 48 runs."

Mumbai miracle

In front of a raucous home crowd, Mumbai Indians create enough chaos to win by five runs. Daniel Sams has eight to defend in the final over. First ball is a single. Six feet either side of deep point, and it's four. Next ball, a slower-ball dot to Rahul Tewatia. Then Tewatia runs himself out taking a risky second. At seven off three, Rashid manages just a single. Then Miller is beaten by two consecutive slower balls. Not even bat on ball. Mumbai still need a lot of rain in the rest of the tournament to have a chance to qualify but they are celebrating right now.

Bumrah 4-0-48-1

Things get tense with the equation coming down to 16 off eight. Jasprit Bumrah is in the middle of a superb over. At this point it doesn't matter that he has gone for plenty in the powerplay. It is Jasprit friggin' Bumrah after all. At the death. David Miller, though, pulls the next ball for a flat six to keep GT in ascendency. Nine required off the final over. They are 93% favourites according to our Forecaster.

Hardik Pandya leaves the door ajar

With 22 required off 15, Hardik Pandya takes off for a risky single, but then also doesn't dive knowing the keeper Ishan Kishan can get a direct hit on him. eventually he is caught on the line when the wicket lights up. It's 22 off 14 now, and now we have Miller and Tewatia in the middle. Our Forecaster has them at 80% favourites.

Sudharsan hit-wicket

It has happened to the best of them, including David Warner and his captain Hardik Pandya. Sai Sudharsan has just become the 14th to be out hit-wicket in the IPL. He tries to pull a slower bouncer, and he has gone so hard he loses the bottom hand on the bat. The top hand alone can't keep the momentum from hitting the wicket. GT need 40 off the last four. Seven wickets in hand. Bumrah has two overs left. GT 71% favourites to win.

Ashwin takes two

Both the openers try to hit M Ashwin for sixes in the 13th over, and both are caught in the deep, Gill atb long-on and saha at deep square leg. That's 111 for 2, now 62% favourites to win.

Fifties for Saha and Gill

Wriddhiman Saha took pressure off Shubman Gill in the powerplay, and now Gill has allowed him to go at 13 off 11 balls since the powerplay. That 13th run brings up his fifty.
In the next over, Gill gets to his fifty too. He gets thre in 33 balls. Saha took 34. GT are 102 for 0 in 13.2, which makes them 77% favourites to win.

Saha slaying Bumrah

25 Number of runs Wriddhiman Saha has taken off Jasprit Bumrah's nine balls in his first two overs. That's the most anyone has taken off Bumrah in the powerplay of any T20 game. He has faced 22 balls in the first five overs for 36 runs while Shubman Gill has scored four off eight.

A low of a kind

How bad was the impact of the innings of Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard? Let Shiva Jayaraman answer that with a stat that only he could have found. The query, though, is Sampath Bandarupalli's.
There have been 134 instances of three batters scoring 40-plus runs at a strike rate of 150-plus in a T20 innings. Mumbai Indians' 177 in this innings is the lowest of those scores where the team has either batted 20 overs or has been bowled out. St. Lucia Stars (Zouks) scored 183 in a chase of 204 Jamaica Tallawahs in 2018, which is the previous lowest. The lowest first innings effort is Trinbago Knight Riders' 185 against Barbados Tridents in 2020.

GT to chase 178

Tim David manages to hit two sixes in the final over, refusing singles all over. That leaves them 177 to defend. It is an underwhelming total after the start they got: 63 for 0 in six overs. GT, though, fought back well with changes of pace, which is something MI would have noted. They might have fewer than what they would have wanted, but it is still a score on the board. GT's batting is susceptible, remember.
"We are probably a bit short," says David, who ends up with 44 off 21.

Pandya's direct hit hurts his team

In the 19th over, Hardik Pandya runs out Tilak Varma with a direct hit from mid-off, but here is the thing: it is a high full toss, and now that a dismissal is involved, they will check if the ball is too high. And it is. And Tim David hits a six off the free hit. So a case there - if you are hyper aware, that is - to not score direct hits when you know it is a border-line full toss. Probably even drop a catch?
Anyway, Lockie Ferguson has his own back later in the over with a slower ball settling with deep midwicket. MI 164 for 6 in 19 overs. They still have David there for the last over.

Rashid 4-0-24-2

That despite bowling one over in the powerplay and one at the death. The first went for 13. In the last, the 17th, he had a slip. That's because his middle two overs brought wickets, the big ones of Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard. MI 142 for 4 in 17. Projected score 174.

Pollard b Rashid 4 (15)

Sent in to bat as early as the 13th over, Kieron Pollard, in his second-slowest IPL already, decides to play in a calculated manner, which is to see off Lockie Ferguson and, especially, Rashid Khan. Rashid, though, shows he is good enough to get Pollard even when he is defending. He gets a legbreak to go past the edge - it would appear Pollard is playing for the wrong'un or the slider - and take the top of off. He is gone for four off 13. If he was going to bat this way, it was perhaps better to hold him back. MI 119 for 4 in 14.5. Projected score 169.

Kishan falls short of fifty

Alzarri Joseph has bowled a good comeback over, mixing his pace to the two left-hand batters. The last ball, a slower ball at 124ks, is chipped straight to short midwicket. Rashid now has a hand in each of the three dismissals.
Kishan has scored 45 off 29 but it has been a scratchy innings. MI 111 for 3 in 12 overs. Projected score 187.

Sangwan gets Surya

In the 11th over, Suryakumar Yadav looks to go over mid-off, but the short-of-a-length ball doesn't arrive as quickly as he accepts it to. He ends up skying it to midwicket. Gone for 13 off 11. MI 99 for 2 in 10.3 overs. Projected score 188.

Rashid will not be denied

Rashid Khan and Jasprit Bumrah have been part of a new trend where the teams are playing them off without risk and targeting other bowlers in their sides. Same with Sunil Narine. As a result, Rashid had nine wickets at under seven an over coming into this match. Today, though, Mumbai have been going after everyone. Rashid's first over, inside the powerplay, went for 13 runs. In his second, too, Rohit tries a reverse-sweep having faced just two dot balls. Rashid is too good if you try to hit him out. Rohit is out lbw for 43 off 28. MI 74 for 1 in 7.3 overs.

Rohit at his best

Intent, timing and placement, all in place. this is the best Rohit Sharma has looked in white-ball cricket in a while. It is a batting track too. The ball is coming on, there is no seam or swing, and the bounce is even. Rohit has taken everybody on, and reached 42 off 24 in the powerplay. That has given them comfortably their best powerplay at 63 for 0. Projected score? 189.

Why open with Alzarri Joseph?

Gujarat Titans have had their opening bowling combination sorted: Mohammed Shami's seam and left-arm swing of either Pradeep Sangwan or Yash Dayal. In this match, though, they gave the second over to Alzarri Joseph even though Sangwan has conceded just 12 runs to Rohit in 17 balls for one wicket. Rohit has taken Joseph for 14 runs including a massive six. Mumbai Indians are 19 for 0 in two overs.

Meet Kumar Kartikeya

So Mumbai are playing two wristspinners today, one of whom is Kumar Kartikeya in only his second IPL match. Here is an excerpt from his story.
It was this obsession nine years ago that brought a 15-year-old Kartikeya from Kanpur to Bharadwaj's academy in Delhi. He had promised his family that he won't let his cricket add to the financial burden of his father, a constable in Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC). Kartikeya knew nobody in Delhi except his friend Radheshyam, who used to play league cricket. Radheshyam took him to many academies, but everyone demanded a hefty fee.

Gujarat win toss, back to chasing

After experimenting with batting first in two games - winning the day game, losing the night one - Gujarat Titans are back to chasing. Hardik Pandya said the new ball might do something in the first innings. They are unchanged from the last match.
Mumbai Indians have made one change, bringing in wristspinner M Ashwin for offspinner Hrithik Shokeen, who has hit for four sixes in an over by Jos Buttler in the last game.
Gujarat Titans 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 B Sai Sudharsan, 4 Hardik Pandya (capt.), 5 David Miller, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Pradeep Sangwan

Hardik Pandya vs Rohit Sharma

Who would have thought Hardik Pandya will be a top-order batter with a better season than Rohit Sharma and will actually be playing against Rohit's side? Anything can happen in the IPL. We are into Match 51. It's Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians. One side all but qualified for play-offs, one side is out of the tournament. Fifteen minutes before we get to know the combinations.
