IPL 2023 - Live Report: Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians, Delhi

By Sidharth Monga

Another thriller

Let's catch our breaths and recap what we have witnessed. A high-quality T20 match on a slow surface where the teams tussled hard to score a par score and then have it chased last ball of the match. David Warner's struggle continued but he kept trying things to get out of the rut. Axar Patel helped him out with a quick fifty, but Jason Behrendorff dragged them back in the 19th over.
Rohit Sharma, unsatisfactory returns to his name for a long time, came out firing to utilise the field restrictions and the new ball and turned it around with a fifty, but DC were superb in the second half of the defence. In the end, just enough power, just enough desperation, just enough luck for MI to get on board. DC still await their first points.
We leave you with that only to join you tomorrow for another match. Thanks for your company.

Mumbai dive to their first points

Anrich Nortje has bowled a sensational final over landing yorker after yorker, bringing it down to two off the last ball. The drama is intense. One catch is dropped, and on another occasion they successfully get a wide call overturned. The giants, though, run hard on the last ball, and Tim David puts in a desperate dive to get in. David Warner's throw is just a touch high, which means it takes that extra millisecond to get the ball down. Enough time for David to dive in. High-quality death bowling, and just enough power in the end for MI.

MI's big guns come out

The giants Cameron green and Tim David ruin the figures of Mustafizur Rahman, who had brought DC back into the match. Each of them gets a big hit in each to take 15 off the 19th over, leaving themselves five to get in the last over. Mustafiz hardly bowled a bad ball.

Porel takes a stunner

An absolutely sensational catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma. It is a yorker from Mustafizur that rohit looks to steer, gets an edge way to the keeper's right, but Porel gets there. It is not getting there that is the real unbelievable thing, it is that when full stretch and in the air, he has the core strength and the mental awareness to stretch his glove further away to delay the fall onto the ground and thus making sure the ball doesn't pop out. Rohit gone for 65 off 45. MI need 26 off the last three overs with two new batters at the wicket.

Another golden duck for Suryakumar

What a rollercoaster of an over for Mukesh Kumar. DC made the seemingly defensive move of bowling him and not their best bet, Anrich Nortje, on the back of that good over from Mustafizur Rahman. For the first three balls, it looked like Tilak Varma had broken the game open with 16 runs, but Mukesh has come back. First Varma finds deep midwicket trying to repeat a six to a slot ball. Then Suryakumar Yadav plays the swivel-pull behind square but finds fine leg. Yet another golden dude ck for him if we are allowed to mix formats for a second.
MI opt for the Impact Player, Tim David.

Getting tight

Mustafizur Rahman bowls an excellent 15th over, which takes the asking rate to 10 for the last five overs. Mumbai have nine wickets in hand, but it doesn't matter much if bowlers end up using the conditions and deny boundaries to anyone. The win probability for MI has fallen from 83 to 65% in one over.

Rohit Sharma leads MI's chase

There were suggestions he needs to rethink his aggressive approach, but Rohit Sharma says that's not how T20 cricket goes. He has not scored runs in a long time, but Rohit has not misused the new ball to get himself back to form. He knew MI needed to take a toll of the new ball otherwise they would be up against it. Rohit has done just that, and has now brought up his fifty in 29 balls. The centre piece of the innings has to be the two sixes off Anrich Nortje. MI 112 for 1in 12 overs. They need 61 in eight now.

Kishan run out

Rohit Sharma turns down one call for a single, and then takes the second one when Ishan Kishan doesn't even want the run. However, the call is the non-striker's as the ball has gone behind square. Since end of powerplay: nine balls, three runs, one wicket.
Good news: even though Suryakumar Yadav is not the new man in, he is padded up and ready.

MI boss the powerplay

Just like in the DC innings, Mumbai Indians know the new ball and field restrictions is the best time to do all your quick scoring. Both Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan took the risks despite the odd ball turning a log way. Rohit is 37 off 17, Ishan Kishan 30 off 19 as they take 68 from the powerplay.

Eyes on Surya

We haven't heard an update on Suryakumar Yadav since he walked off with a hit on the top of the left eye in the 17th over. If he is concussed, MI could make a substitution for him without using the Impact Sub. Also eyes on who the Impact Player will be: Tim David or Tristan Stubbs?

Shaw out, Mukesh in

Delhi Capitals have made their Impact Substitution at the start of the innings. Mukesh Kumar replaces Prithvi Shaw, and is opening the bowling against Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan.
1

DC bowled out for 172

It is a par score if there is no dew, but DC have taken the circuitous route to it. Big powerplay, slow middle overs, then quick wickets, Axar Patel resurrecting the innings, and then another collapse of four wickets in one over.
The one constant for them has been the struggling David Warner, who ended up with 51 off 47 despite trying all the shots. In today's game, it is not that bad an outcome because the ball was gripping, but Warner is aware he is not in a good touch.

MI strike back

Jason Behrendorff, usually a bowler who bowls three in the powerplay, has brought MI right back. He bowled just one in the powerplay tonight, and came back only for two death overs. In the first he should have had Axar but ended up conceding six. Now, though, he has dismissed both Axar and Warner, whose 51 off 47 becomes the perfect nightmare innings. He has tried all the shots, but nothing has come off. In such innings, you hope you can turn it around at the death but now he has left two new batters at the wicket. DC 166 for 7 in 18.3.

3

Axar Patel 53* off 22

Five sixes, four fours. Making a mockery of a difficult pitch, Axar Patel has lifted DC's innings from the doldrums. And if there is no dew later, DC might be onto a challenging total: 165 for 5 after 18. They were 98 for 5 in the 13th over when Axar walked in.

2

Suryakumar in trouble

Suryakumar Yadav has missed Axar Patel twice, coming too far in off the rope on the first occasion, and then missing the second one altogether. Both of the hits went for sixes. The worst part is that the second one has hit him flush on the top of the left eye. He is off the field, and hopefully there is no serious injury out of this. DC 151 for 5 in 17 overs.

Fifty for Warner

David Warner is not happy. He is punching his bat. He is berating himself. He is just not pleased with his rhythm. That is 50 off 43 balls, and he is neither raising his bat nor celebrating this knock. This is his third fifty this year, but all of them have taken more than 40 balls. His partner Axar Patel is making up for the slowness, going at two runs a ball. Warner will hope he can emulate Axar in the death over. DC are 136 for 5 after 16.

Chawla keeps chipping away

Minuted after dropping a straightforward chance from David Warner, and drawing the ire of his team-mates, Piyush Chawla shows he is still doing good things with the ball. Yet another batter fails to read his wrong'un, and Lalit Yadav is bowled. DC 98 for 5 in the 13th over, Chawla 3.3-0-17-3.

Wristspin gets Powell again

Rovman Powell fails to read a wrong'un from Piyush Chawla, and is trapped lbw to make it 86 for 4 in the 11th over. Wristbands spin agains Powell is a good match-up: average of 18 and strike-rate of 112. Against spin this IPL he has scored two runs in six balls, and has been out three times.
1

Dhul falls too

The debut doesn't long for Yash Dhul. David Warner is still stuck at a strike-rate of 110. So others are playing shots. Dhul pulls Riley Meredith but falls to an excellent running catch by Nehal Wadhera at long leg. DC 81 for 3 in 9.5 now.

Here's Yash Dhul

With the fall of Manish Pandey out comes Yash Dhul, the former Under-19 India captain. Sreshth Shah did a profile on him. You can read more about him here. DC 76 for 2 in 8.3.

David warner. RHB

Not a switch hit. Not a reverse-sweep. David Warner set up as a right-hand batter to face a free hit in the eighth over. He tried to pull it to midwicket, but managed an edge towards long-off. DC 75 for 1 in eight overs.

Pandey salvages powerplay

With David Warner just 18 off 16, and with Prithvi Shaw gone, DC were under threat of losing the powerplay but Manish Pandey found a way to hit the last two balls for four, the only two he faced from the offspinner. These are important runs because the ball is turning, and you don't expect too many easy boundary opportunities in the middle overs. DC 51 for 1 after six.

Offspinner to RHB inside powerplay: wicket

Rohit Sharma made a bold move by bringing Hrithik Shokeen on in the fourth over. Shokeen bowled around the wicket, and Shaw drove the first ball inside out for four through extra cover, but it was a good shat that he manufactured. Shokeen then went tighter on the line and totally cramped Shaw up. To the fourth ball, Shaw tried the sweep, and found square leg.
Shaw against offspin: 133 balls, 186 runs, out five times. It is not quite a match-up but still offspin is not Shaw's favourite by the numbers: a strike-rate of 140. Having said all that, I think the introduction of Shokeen has got to do with the surface. It is dry, and one or two balls turned too.
DC 34 for 1 in four overs.
1

DC finally make a good start

7 Number of wickets DC had lost in powerplay in three matches, more than any other side. Today, though, they have made an excellent start without taking undue risks: 29 for 0 in three overs.

Meredith in, Archer still not ready; MI bowl

On a dry pitch, Mumbai Indians banked on the dew and went ahead and decided to chase. Riley Meredith replaces Tristan Stubbs in the MI XI. Tim David is out too, leaving three overseas players in the XI. The fourth one will likely be the Impact Player. Jofra Archer is still not ready.
Delhi Capitals have handed out a debut to Yash Dhull. Manish Pandey is in too. The big news is that Mustafizur Rahman is in. Khaleel Ahmed is out with the injury that makes him doubtful.
Delhi Capitals 1 David Warner (capt.), 2 Prithvi Shaw, 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Yash Dhull, 5 Rovman Powell, 6 Axar Patel, 7 Lait Yadav, 8 Abishek Porel (wk), 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Mustafizur Rahman
Mumbai Indians 1 Rohit Sharma (capt.), 2 Cameron Green, 3 Ishan Kishan (wk), 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Nehal Wadhera, 7 Hrithik Shokeen, 8 Arshad Khan, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Jason Behrendorff, 11 Riley Meredith

Someone will get on the board

Day 12, Match 16. It is two teams looking for their first win. Hosts Delhi Capitals and the most successful IPL team Mumbai Indians. Both have had a lousy start to the season. And we have a watch on Jofra Archer, who missed the last match as a precaution. Delhi Capitals will be without Mitchell Marsh, who has gone home for his wedding. Khaleel Ahmed has a niggle too. Let' see what happens at the toss.
